In 1969 Sam Peckinpah directed The Wild Bunch which featured this gun battle

Literally THOUSANDS of rounds of blank ammunition was fired in the making of this scene. Some people say Peckinpah used more ammunition filming this scene than live ammunition was expended in the actual Mexican Revolution.

It was all done using blank ammo from real guns and electronically detonated squib bullet hits with hundreds of extras firing rifles and pistols, many of whom were inexperienced Mexican locals. There was even a Browning Water-Cooled Machinegun and grenade and dynamite explosions.

And nobody so much as got a bruise, let alone shot dead for real.
