A Rambling movie without direction in need of editing, wait for DVD

I was very disappointed by this film, it seemed like the director got to Antartica and had to find a movie to make, but he never found it. Sure there was great scenery but we've seen these before on television. The commentary by the narrator was too sarcastic for me. This movie went nowhere.

i agree with you. Planet Earth is far more interesting. Everything was too set up.

in fact herzog stated at the beginning that he couldnt promise his producers to come back with a movie, so there was no real pressure to accomplish. but i for one think, that herzog accomplished to make one of the greatest "documentaries" i've seen in my life. its simple, simply beatiful, interesting, moving, inspiring,... i have to admit what i would want most after seeing the film is to pack my things and leave for the far south to experience the alien but beatiful and stunning nature and meet the very special, interesting, nice and inspiring people who live there.

but perhaps thats just me.

obviously your first herzog haha

You have cojones the size of watermelons to criticize the great Werner Herzog's instincts for editing and pacing. Apart from that, if you don't understand movies made for adults, you shouldn't go around commenting on them.

Shut up, you insufferable, pretentious ass.

Anyone who says things like "you don't understand movies made for adults" should be banned from these boards and never allowed to speak again.

Yes, I am aware that I am not intelligent enough to understand the film being discussed.

This movie is quite different from something like "Grizzly Man" which is a story about an individual and so it may have seemed a lot more focused and seemed to have more purpose.

Encounters is not a story about an individual or a group of individuals like scientists, explorers and their journey towards a goal in Antartica. A movie like that would seem more focused as it would mostly be about their journey, the problems they would face, the people they counter and whether they finally reach their goal or destination. Many documentaries take this route and become quite conventional in terms of their approach.

This documentary is basically a series of events that Herzog experienced on his trip to Antartica. It is more or less like a travel video but he tried to bring his insight and outlook on the things he experienced. Whether its the people he met or the seals, penguins or the volcano he saw, he tried to narrate things which fascinated him about those incidents.

It may not have a focused narrative like some other documentaries but that's not what Herzog was going for. So it should be judged on the basis of what it is and not what you expected it to be.
