Emilys hatred towards her step mom...

I don't get it ,why does Emily hate her step mom? Other than the fact that when Emilys dad married this lady just a year or 2 after her mom died, and that the step mom is society-obssessed, theres nothing that explains Emilys hatred towards her step mom. Did i miss something?

She seems snotty and talks down to Em.

"Oh, my God. Bear is driving! How can that be?!"

She hated her stepmom for the fact that her dad was *beep* her while Em's mom was dying, and after her mom died she moved into their house and changed everything the way Em's mom had it, and she talked down to Em a lot.

"How's life in a bigger prison, Dae-Su?"

reply

you two pretty much covered it. "remember your childhood friend so-and-so? well *she's* going to law school now at so-and-so." the whole "you lack ambition!" crap from a step parent would get on my nerves too.

reply

My dads gf is the same way to me! I just want to slap her so hard and teach tht *beep* a lesson my god i hate her so much i cant describe it!!

CraZy...most likely!

reply

^Tell her how you feel, don't slap her but if she steps out of line than you should call her out on it. No matter how uncomfortable and awkward at may be it's better than letting it build up inside you.

reply

It's only in one scene, but the stepmom would like her to go to law school. Her Dad doesn't see that this pressures her even more.

I love how this film plays with contrasts between people. James' parents are clearly not supportive enough in his studies. Emily's parents on the other hand, are too supportive, being somewhat pushy.

reply

It's not even that Em's step-mom (Francy) is being supportive for loving reasons or she wants Em to get a good education. She wants Em to go to law school so that she can say at parties "My step-daughter is going to law school!"

Em has a fair few reasons to hate her parents:

1. Her dad started screwing Francy while his wife was still alive. Like Em said "Do you wanna hear something *beep* up? When my mom first started getting, like, really sick, my dad starts going to temple. He's never been serious about his faith. But he decided to buddy up to God, like he thought it was going to help save my mom. And that's where he met Francy. My mom loses her hair in chemo, and my dad starts *beep* a bald woman."

2. Em admits that she might feel bad about Francy having a nervous breakdown and losing her hair if she wasn't such a status-obsessed witch.

3. Also, not only does Francy take her dad away from her, she also comes into Em's home and removes everything that Em's mother had put there before her. How would anyone feel if someone came and turned your home into a place that feels completely alien to you?

4. Francy clearly wants to get rid of Em as quickly as possible. When Em returns from her last day and refuses to give Francy an apology for insulting her decorating, Em goes up to her room and can hear her father arguing with Francy about her and Francy actually says to her dad when he says he can't force her out "Well maybe you can't..." After that night Francy would have done everything in her power to torment Em as much as possible, until she left Pittsburgh behind.

Em was a complete stoner skank who probably stank out the place. She was a typical judgemental nasty bitch who thoroughly deserved her lousy life. She will no doubt spend the rest of it constructing makeshift bongs, contracting stds - and berating other people for their shortcomings. I though Kristen Stewart did a really good job on this movie if this is what she was trying to get across. Top young actress.

reply

If she was such a stoner, why did she get pot from James? Wouldn't she have her own stash? Duh!

She's just a confused young person, who's still mourning her mother's passing and having to deal with a mean step mother, plus her own personal morality issues. Give her break and have a bit more understanding. Maybe you should watch the movie again and really pay attention this time.

I love this movie! I've watched it a bunch on Showtime. I think it's a beautiful story about young people trying to figure out their lives.

reply

Rarely does a film come along which is as perfectly scripted as Adventureland. The first time I watched it, this is the scene which really had me swooning. Maybe it would pass a lot of people over, but it's exactly what i look for in a movie. It's when James confronts Em at Connell's mother's place:

Em: What are you doing here?

James: Are you and Connell, like...

Em:It started in, like...I didn't even know you when it...How did you... What are you...How did you find me here?

James: Lisa P. told me that Connell used to take some other girl here last summer to his mother's basement.

Em: Right.

James: Yeah, I just, like, don't understand how you could do this. I came here to...

Em: I know. I know, I *beep* up too, okay?

James: I *beep* up one time, and I *beep* told you about it, and you...You think I'm, like, some *beep* pathetic idiot or something.

Em: You're not a *beep* idiot. I'm a *beep* idiot.

James: Yeah, that's right. *beep*

So, in 99.9% of movies, even the very finest ones, in the key scenes characters come out with these perfect, nail-on-the-head, speeches which sum up everything they're feeling in a brilliantly, concise manner. In real life, when the big, emotional moments come, the average person inevitably *beep* up and end's up blurting out an obscene, rambling mess. Adventureland nails it so perfectly that it almost made me cry with satisfaction.

reply

This is so true. It was refreshing to see a movie for once portraying the spontaneity of emotions and how speech changes when it comes to moments like these.

Agreed on that.

Totally agree with this. Totally disagree with the previous poster who called her a stoner skank. And that poster calls HER judgmental?? Sad.

reply

I"m not sure about that. I think its deeper. I lost my dad when I was a teenager, and it hurts. That hurt comes out as anger. I never accepted any of the guys my mom dated then. Sure the mom was superficsal and fake, but Em was particularly nasty to her.

reply

This. Her stepmom wasn't great, but Em was way out of bounds in how rude she was to her. But that's realistic in the situation.

reply

Em was treated like shi t by the step mom. family or not its almost impossible to love someone who is ALWAYS talking down to u
