Why do ppl forget/hate the '90s???

Seriously. I grew up as a teen in the 90s, and I LOVED it: the sophistication (a nice break from the tacky 80s), the alternative and hip hop music, the cool irony of young people, the awesome movies...

Why is this decade the least respected and paid attention to? It's already 2009, and ppl still don't mention much about it. (And no, it's NOT too early, cuz in 1999 the 80s were already a strong nostalgic period we often reflected on!!).

It wasn't as flashy as the tacky 80s or as wild as the swingin 70s, but I'm sure now that the 00's are coming to a CRASHING end (boo hoo, this d*mn recession!), ppl will at least appreciate the 90s for it's prosperity and relative safety in comparison to this DUD of a decade (00s).

I'm a 90's kid, and I have to say that this seriously had to be the best time to live in. Looking back at the 80's every thing just seemed as you said, tacky. When the 90's came along there was this level of sophistication that seemed to sprout out of no where. The 80's just have this really bleak cold look to them. The 90's? Mine as well have been summer all year round.

Thank you, rakashu!!

Exactly! the 90s were like the opposite of the 80s.. it was sooo cool and sophisticated!! The movies, styles, music.. we needed to recover from the tackiness of the 80s. The generation X "irony/sarcasm" was a reaction to it all.

Ppl don't like coolness, when they look back though. They wanna look back and scream in embarassment and ridicule, which is what the 80s are for.

You kidding me, OP? I still have a copy of Wu Tang 36 Chambers in the CD changer in my car! Best era for Hip Hop...PERIOD!!!!! I hate the 2000s. You don't hear rappers tell stories anymore. Everything is about money and materialism. I refuse to listen to the radio. And don't get me started on MTV.

The 90s will live on forever!!!!!

I guess it will be me that plays devils advocate.

There are a number of reasons why the 90s is not as endeared as the 80s. The first being the obvious that its still fresh in our minds. Also the 90s has ties to the *beep* 00s which I think will taint its legacy.

As an inbetweener, (born in 82) the 80s carried a lightheartedness too it that many remember fondly. The 90s is responsible for the birth of a lot of the *beep* we see now although it didn't start out that way. Reality tv, this *beep* rap generation, the crappy movies, all have 90s ties. I have been listening to rap for a while and even though 90s was booming with great rap music, its also the birth of the pretentious gangster rappers we see today, these fake studio gangsters that made money off of manufactured beefs (I am looking at you Dr. Dre)all showed up in the 90s. Cartoons, I can't lie, the 90s produced some of the best cartoons. The 90s also showed that a lot of this (revolution) music was as manufactured as anything from the 80s. I think the problem with the 90s is it has too many ties to this generation, the 00s is like the 90s *beep* twin brother.

You are so right! That is its downfall. I do agree that overall the 80s were tackier than the 90s. But I have a lot of love for the 80s even though I can't remember much of it. Some of the best music/entertainment from the 80s, well the 90s too. But my point is the 90s had its fair share of crap. I love the 80s almost as much as the 90s, probably because I have older siblings who exposed me to so many things. If it weren't for them I might not even remember the early part of the 90s. And it's not like you can just seperate the decades that easily. Each decade mentioned, and back even farther had something special about it. I love looking back at the outrageous outfits, the dances, the historical aspect and so forth, especially for the 70s, 80s, and 90s. Anyway, I do love the 90s the most. I think we should all rally against the 2000s in all its piteous glory even though I was still growing in the first half. Just kidding, the 2000s wasn't that bad but it defintely is the worst of the best.

1. I don't believe we can say the 90s were "too recent in our memory" anymore. It's 2009. Ten years ago in 1999, people already felt like the 80s were nostalgiac and far away. So you can't keep using that as an excuse.

2. BUT, you are right about how the 90s and 00s are very similar... THAT's prolly why ppl keep thinking the 90s were "not so far away".

LOL.. do you think it's possible that these two decades will be known as the most similar to each other, ever?

I think they might actually!!! Sadly, our culture hasn't changed much from the 90s at all... Maybe it's cuz the internet exploded in the late 90s, and became even more mainstream in the 00s.

Maybe it's cuz yea, the "Reality show" trend had its roots in the 90s..

Also, just the attitudes of the 90s are still kinda similar today: a sense of post-everything, youth-based, pop culture obsession, consumerism, overly-dependent on technology, hip-hop culture..

These things haven't left the mainstream since the 90s. The only difference is that the 00's were WORSE, which we can all at least agree on: 9/11, terrorism, the Bush years, the recession. LOL.

There are some similarities to the 90s and 00s, but in terms of fashion, there are lots of differences. I remember girls wearing flower hats and guys having some hairstyles that would seem a little out of place now. I didn't even see some guys I know use those hairstyles during this decade, at least no one I knew did. Sure, some things are still a little similar, but there are still major differences.

All I need is one mic...

I prefer the 80's, the 90's were blah to me, especially the early 90's. Early 90's fashion was just awful. The mid 90's were ok but the late 90's see below.

I remember back in the late 90's there was that 70's revival thing going on. People were walking around in bell bottoms and platform shoes lol. Yeah, that only lasted what? a year?

With that said, I wonder if in the next few years there will be an 80's revival of sorts? Flock of Seagulls haircuts and all.

I was born in '87 so i was only young in the 90s, but it's definitely the best best best decade! I love the ugly tie-dye, fluro parachute pants, caps on backwards... Hi-Top shoes from the 90s are the best!!!! And making a revival now, which is awesome.

The music was tops, trip-hop, grunge and rap were big and making their heyday! Body modification becamse widespread and fashionable (not that being fashionable is necessarily a good thing but at least it made body mods open to all, normal and relatively mainstream), dreads were in, baggy pants were in... Sigh.

Sometimes I like to think of decades in terms of the drugs that influenced them. 80s = cocaine, 90s = pot and ecstacy!! No contest!

The 80s were lame, I hate how it's fashionable to be into the 80s now. The music was terrible, the clothes were horrific and the general attitude to life was *beep*
(Wasn't it all about money and wealth?)

Anyway, just giving the 90s some respect, wish I could have been born a bit earlier and not in New Zealand so I could have appreciated them!!

No, I remember in the 90s, the 80s were already very DISTINCT from the 90s.

That's what I mean.. the 00's are almost over this year, and still the 90s doesn't seem to get any attention.

Picture 1999: don't u think ppl already felt separated from the 80s culture by that year?

The 00's and 90's are just too similar, I think.

p.s. I do see the 20-year cycle reasoning, but at the same time--my point above.

Totally agree. The '90s were amazing. The '00s were awful. I'm extremely grateful to have grown up in the '90s instead of today.
