Why do ppl forget/hate the '90s???

Seriously. I grew up as a teen in the 90s, and I LOVED it: the sophistication (a nice break from the tacky 80s), the alternative and hip hop music, the cool irony of young people, the awesome movies...

Why is this decade the least respected and paid attention to? It's already 2009, and ppl still don't mention much about it. (And no, it's NOT too early, cuz in 1999 the 80s were already a strong nostalgic period we often reflected on!!).

It wasn't as flashy as the tacky 80s or as wild as the swingin 70s, but I'm sure now that the 00's are coming to a CRASHING end (boo hoo, this d*mn recession!), ppl will at least appreciate the 90s for it's prosperity and relative safety in comparison to this DUD of a decade (00s).

I don't know anybody who hates the 90s. Certainly anybody who grew up in the 90s would agree it was the best decade, such as me.

I wouldn't say it was the best decade, it was a great one to grow up on but not the best in my opinion. Someone who grew up in the '70s or '80s could compare and contrast better than someone who just grew up in the '90s cause they can't really give a true perspective on an era in which they were either too young or not born at all. I think the '90s are getting more appreciation as time goes by, esp. since '00s have been pretty lame in terms of art but strong in the sense of technology. I grew up in between both, I would say the 1st have of the '90s was great up till about till about '96 when P. Diddy came along & 2pac left because for some odd reason things changed. I appreacite both but I gotta say there is nothing like the '80s, esp. the 1st half! To get a feeling of the '80s watch the docu "Style Wars." Talk to people who grew up in the '70s & 80s in NYC to get an idea. Ultimately, an era in which somebody grew up in always has something special!

reply

The 90s were cool cuz yea, i came of age during it. I liked the sophistication of it; cuz in my opinion, the 80s and 70s were tacky-looking.

By far I'm sure most ppl will say the 00s were bad. A lot of bad things happened: 9/11, the recession, the Iraq War, the Bush years.

Not to mention the explosion of crappy music like boy bands, pop stars, and teeny boppers.

reply

The 00s will always be known as bad times, especially for music, and plenty of terrible movies that should have never been made (but I guess that is every decade).
Yet I don't see it picking up for 2010. Maybe the good decades are already past.

The '90s were great.

The '90s gets a lot of respect..from the people who grew up then, like myself.

The Wackness - 9/10
Palindromes - 8/10

reply

I guess the 90s just doesn't get a lot of hype, mostly.

I mean, people wet themselves over the 80s. I guess if the style is over-the-top, it gets more attention.

And yes, the 00s were very lame in terms of entertainment: reality shows destroying TV forever. And all the awful pop music taking over the mainstream, while these "emo" bands try to rehash the 80s music...

It's already the end of the 00's, and no one cares yet about the 90s. It's takin' a while!

reply

I don't know about that, I go on YouTube all the time and when I watch a music video for a song that came out in the 1990s, some people feel nostalgic about it, even me! I see videos for 80s songs and people feel nostalgic about that even more. I am an 80s baby, so I have no true memories of the 1980s, but I don't see how it was that good. Tacky styles and such. Whatever floats one's boat, I suppose.

exactly! I only remember 1988 onward, mostly.

and YES, I HATE the tackiness of the 80s. It's not bad, just not my kind of decade.

the 90s was SOOO me lol: hip, edgy, cool, sophisticated.

Ppl just like trainwrecks like the 80s, stylistically.

Really? I forgot. I remember the early to mid-90s, when the hairstyles were reversed for guys and girls: Short cropped hair for girls; long, shoulder-length hair for guys (think: the stoner from "Clueless" ;).

reply

Yeah, I had that haircut... Most of my friends did, too...

Well, you live and learn.

I'd like to keep Spike as my pet.

Interesting that you guys said short spiky hair (late 90s) and long grunge hair (early 90s) -- Luke's parted hair brought back memories for me. I guess that was mid-90s.

reply

Spiky hair? What about during the time of 1999-2001 when guys used to dye their hair blonde?

"Seriously. I grew up as a teen in the 90s, and I LOVED it: the sophistication (a nice break from the tacky 80s)"

Say what now? I grew up as a teen in the 80s, and i LOVED it.. =) What i don't love is watching pictures of myself from that era. Looked like a darn poodle at times... Oh wait. I take it all back, You are absolutely right. It was a tacky decade.. but it was also a very colorful age compared to the 'gray' 70's. (Well i was a kid in the 70's ... so i really don't know. But our TV had 2 channels. No cell phones. Manchester jeans and wooden clogs.

So the 80's was a great era in that a lot of technical inventions sprung up, altho a lot of needless ones too.. But we could have done without the pink legwarmers and spandex. And all that hairspray. =)

I think I'm gonna grow me an awesome mullet.

I love the 90's, despite my crap childhood. At least then I could sit in my living room at night and put on the radio. The world faded away then.

For all the nerds out there, remember when Wizard Magazine didn't skimp on the pages; I don't think they have Basic Training anymore.

And cartoons! From Batman TAS to Daria!, I miss it all. Kids today don't know what they're missing.

Don't tell me what I can't do!

i LOVE the 90s. i was watching vh1's "100 greatest songs of the 90s" and practically ever song was amazing then i watched the show for the 80s and all i saw were big hair bands singing crappy music. the only great things to come out of the 80s were michael (solo), u2, journey (who can live without "don't stop believin'"), and a couple of other artists/bands/songs. in general, it was too tacky for my taste.

reply

I know! the 80s was so friggin TACKY. Ugh. The hair???? Who the f would wanna revisit that? At least 90s hairdos and overall styles were hip: edgy, alternative..

I think ppl just fall in love with over-the-top things, and that is the 80s, definitely not the 90s. The 90s were too sophisticated and cool for its own good.

We only remember the tragically gaudy trends...
