Another bomb for Depp and it all began here

The Lone Ranger bombed. Now Transcendence bombs...great news! It began here with Depp screwing over Dark Shadows. Time for Depp to go to sleep for 200 years. Maybe when he wakes up he can try to salvage his career.

I'd put the beginning of the slide even earlier - "The Tourist" - if I'm honest...

It's really quite sad, the truth is Johnny Depp is an incredible actor... when he is actually trying to play a role. The problem is far too frequently he ends up relying on trying to be quirky instead of actually infusing the role with depth and emotion. This was an asset in POTC, but in so many other movies it was a huge liability, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Lone Ranger, Ed Wood for example. I like his more serious roles where he is portraying a person instead of a quirk, such as A Nightmare on Elm Street or the Ninth Gate, hell even in Cry-Baby, where his character was more of comedic satire, he was still more likable than in many of his other movies.

Oh well, nobody is on top forever. I can't think of any celebrity who every single thing they touch turns to gold for their entire career. Everybody turns into a "washed up hasbeen" at some point. In my opinion it's creating something classic that people will still be talking about decades from now that really counts.

He still gave us Benny & Joon and What's eating Gilbert Grape and those were in his early 20's, he may be past his best but he's among just a handful of today's actor's who will be remembered in 75 years the way we remember a handul of 1940's stars.

So many examples of this - just to name a couple: Marlon Brando, Elizabeth Taylor.

I have not been a big fan of Depp, but I admire his dedication to his craft I've got to say, I thought he was good - very good in this film.

I haven't watched much of him; not into the pirate movies. Jack Spratt, I found more irritating than entertaining. I think maybe a lot of people are burnt out on Depp; maybe he over-saturated big and little screens. And now when people see Depp they are unable to divorce him from past performances

Recently I watched a marathon broadcast of Dark Shadows (Decades TV channel) and I think Depp does a pretty good interpretation of Barnabus.

Fortunately the 200 years the op aid weren't needed, Depp got his mojo back in Black Mass

Sean Bean has not died from Lightsaber related issues yet...just saying

Every film I've seen with Johnny Depp I've enjoyed. I liked him in 21 Jump Street and have always been a fan. He makes interesting movies. What makes you say Dark Shadows was a flop anyway? Can't you decide for yourself if you like something without it being the highest grossing film of all time? Johnny Depp is a great actor.

I'm amazed that some on here are saying that Depp didn't really have a "hit movie" until POTC came out. This is a film website, there's no reason to be so misinformed about his career. Not counting Nightmare on Elm Street, he has Edward Scissorhands, Ed Wood, Fear & Loathing, What's Eating G.G., Donnie Brasco, Dead Man, Sleepy Hollow, etc etc. I could name several more that came out well before POTC that were at least critically, if not financially, successful.

His Jack Sparrow role was just the beginning of his ridiculously over the top characiture acting. Yes, he was quirky and strange even back in his Edward Scissorhands days, but he took it to the next level in POTC, and he's been mostly over the top since. It worked in the first Pirates film, but he's just become a parody of himself. I'm a fan of his earlier work, personally. The only movies of his that I can truly say I enjoyed and was impressed by his performance in the last 10 years are Public Enemies and Black Mass. Anyways, the point of this rambling is that Depp had several hits before POTC, and in fact MOST of his great hit films came out before POTC.
