where was The Descent set?

was it set anywhere specific. I seem to recall thinking it was likely to be in Europe somewhere when i watched it. ..but then they say the 2nd was set in the Appalachians. Was that just Americanisation? or was the original set there?

In the first one Alex Reid's character, Beth is seen driving a car with a North Carolina license plate

reply

The original actually showed a sign for something like "Chattanooga National Park". The scenery certainly is breathtaking down there. Though to my understanding, it was filmed in the UK.

reply

The sign said "Chatooga"

reply

The sign said "Chatooga"

Then the sign had a gross misspelling in it. ;-)

I did find it silly that it's supposed to be set in North Carolina yet most of the people had a British accent. It was like they didn't even try...

reply

Why silly? They weren't suppose to be American, they were suppose to be just there caving. A caving holiday.

reply

A caving holiday.

A caving hol? That's a blimey ding-woggle, it is!

reply

I think the story was that most of them had gone on vacation to America. Although this is a british film so technically some british actors are to be expected.

reply

I think I read somewhere that most of it wasn't even filmed in a real cave but I could be wrong about that.

It looked like it was somewhere in the TAG region.

reply

It was supposed to be set in the US, but early in the movie one character says something about what happened in Scotland and the one woman has a Scottish accent. It was filmed in the UK.

reply

...one character says something about what happened in Scotland ...

In the beginning of the first film, Juno,Sarah, and Beth are whitewater rafting in Scotland, it was probably that that was mentionned

reply

All the caves were just built sets.

reply

It's set in the Appalachian Mountains supposedly in the North Carolina/Tennessee portion of the region. The trees give it away, though.
It was filmed in Northern England and in Scotland.

Bad films are a crime against humanity.

reply

I thought one of them said they were in Hyde county North Carolina, which would be way off as that county is at the coast.

reply

Until I did some research on it, I thought that first film had been filmed in North Carolina. It certainly looked like I remembered Western North Carolina being.
However, the second movie is obviously not filmed in the US. The trees are wrong, the highways aren't like those in the US and the generator in the mine scene is obviously not the type used in the US.

Frankly, why set it in the US and then not film it there?

Bad films are a crime against humanity.

reply

I coulda sworn that it was set around the Carpathian Mountains.

It is filmed where you guys can keep asking where it was filmed, just for you to keep asking where. LOL!

I am a gore watching freak!!!

If it don't have it, it isn't worth the watch.

It is filmed where you guys can keep asking where it was filmed, just for you to keep asking where. LOL! It is a secret. Read the spoofs and information about the movie on here. They filmed in UK and in USA, but all over. It says they had to convert some from UK to USA and there was spoofs or errors because of it. Like the highway on the first one. Showed the jeep on the grass, but when the semi honked and drove by the jeep was on the road. It is a conversion from UK to USA version of the movie. So it could be half and half of UK and USA movie, just they had hard time making it one or the other. This one is probably done the same way, but no clue.

reply

they do have dirt roads in the US.

reply

Both films, within the first five minutes laid out where they take place...

reply

In the first film, it clearly states that they were in the Appalachian Mountains in USA. And they do make notice of the North Carolina license plate. My travels down there the Mountains are more prevalent in Tennessee, the next State west of North Carolina. The car must have been rented in North Carolina but where exactly the Caves were I do not know.

My sentiments exactly, if filmed in Scotland, why did they choose USA for this film to take place? Agreed about the trees in the establishing shots, couldn't they at least shoot the Appalachians for accuracy? Was it budget or simply laziness on the Producers part?

reply

Maybe because the Southeastern USA is known for having the best known cave systems in the entire world and Scotland is not?

reply

Being in the USA was an important part of the plot, Juno the American girl took the British girls to an uncharted cave only she knew about.
