Patrik 1,5 was very well received at the Toronto International Film Festival, where I saw it. A very sweet, wonderful film.

It was awesome! Romantic!

And yes, I cried a little...=')
But it moved me!

But there were so many young teenagers in the audience, and they always giggled when they kissed on screen... annoying...

I really liked it a lot! Not the best movie ever, but it made me feel soooo happy. I hope it will be well received wherever it gets released. I'm so excited about the US release!

The movie was really good. It deserves a better rating. I liked the way it dealt with homophobia and same-sex parents. For instance, the small girl who calls Goran "homo" but doesn't actually know what it means! Also, I liked the way Patrik warms up to Goran. Great acting all around!

After "You are not alone, Evil, Friends Forever, Sebastian and this movie, I have become a fan of Swedish/Norwegian/Danish movies.

So much to see, so little time!

Thanks for the list of other good Scandinavian films, Blue-Lagoon. I've seen "Patrik 1,5" and "Evil" and thought both were great. I'm gonna have to try the other ones.

@ blue-lagoon -

Fancy meeting you here! I kept waiting for the dvd to come out in the U.S., but gave up, overcame my scruples and watched the movie on YouTube. And again. And again. I agree that all three main actors are superb (as are many of the secondary and bit roles).

Speaking of 'Evil,' it's interesting to see Gustaf Skarsgard play such a totally different role in 'Patrik.' After learning the Swedish word for 'sh*t' from the dining-room scene in 'Evil,' I recognized that it was often spoken (by Sven, for the most part) in 'Patrik.' Also, I think Patrik looked a lot like Erik must have when he was younger.

I'll have to check out 'Sebastian.'

Cheers!

"Nothing personal. Your name just happened to come up."

It was better than I thought it would be...finally we get a gay drama with people who can really act!

Blessed are you when people insult persecute, and falsely say evil against you because of me

It truly was cute and awesome. I really liked it!

I just saw this yesterday at Newfest G&L Film Festival in New York. It's a very heartwarming, feel good film. It's good to see, from other posts to the film's message boards, that it's receiving a prominent place in other gay and lesbian film festivals.

The acting, especially for the parts of Goran and Patrik, is top-notch and really make you feel for and hope for the happiness of the characters. All the actors in the film seem to know how to display many different different emotions extremely well.

I can, however, see the point some people have made in other opinions that it seems a little farfetched that Patrik was a little bit of a thug and all of a sudden turns into this wonderful warm guy with an extremely high emotional IQ that helps to heal everyone. I guess we are supposed to believe that Goran's warmth and ability to give warms Patrik's heart and turns him around.

But, that and several other points are made so much more believable because of the great acting and the vulnerabilty that these male actors are able to display. They really pull you along into the story and make it all seem so believable. So, all in all, I think this was a great film, that, just to say it again, really warmed my heart and made me feel great.

Hello tom, I agree that the excellent acting put the movie in different league. Regarding the sudden turn displayed by Patrik, I think it was not so sudden but over a period of time and justified well.

Initially Patrik is certainly not happy about staying with 'gays' but considers it better than returning to the juvenile home. Also, while staying with Goran, he is trying to save money by doing gardening for the neighbors. He is in no way altruistic in this aspect. Patrik also mentions that he did gardening in the juvenile home but it was never appreciated. So it was not like he suddenly started gardening.

Patrik was always rejected by people (even his aunt) and nobody had cared for him. So he was touched by what Goran did for him at the expense of breaking up with Sven. Also, he was actually just a kid inside who tried to project himself as a tough adult. This is portrayed beautifully in the scene where Goran offers to put a band-aid on Patrik's cut.

Overall, I enjoyed the feeling of warmth created in the movie.

So much to see, so little time!

My wife and I saw it together on a whim, and I really enjoyed it. I loved that Sven and Goran's relationship wasn't exploited for cheap titillation, but instead felt really honest and real...almost more real than some heterosexual relationships I've seen in real life. I personally don't see many GLBT movies, and while I have gay friends, I'm not privy to the intimate details of their lives, so some of the love scenes were a little weird for me, but like I said, I really liked the characters. I especially liked that Goran was unabashedly gay and didn't make apologies for it, but he also didn't have that "activist" mentality that I sometimes find annoying. He's just a gentle guy who loves people and wants to live and let live and do the right thing.

Warning: possible spoiler below.

My only complaint is that there's no resolution with the *beep* neighbour with the 50s car. He's just kind of there and pushing everyone around, but it's almost more of a distraction because he doesn't really contribute much of anything to the story. They introduce conflict with the confrontation at the doctors office, but the never resolve it. The way I see it, why introduce a character like that and set people up to expect something they're not going to get?

Other than that, I really liked this movie. And I think Swedish is one of the most beautiful languages.

I saw it as a conscious decision by the filmmakers to keep the focus on the relationships among the main characters. Adding an anti-homophobia subplot would have taken the film too far afield and would have put too many irons into the fire that the director was trying to create.

I also saw the limited treatment of homophobia as a message that not everyone around you is going to be nice, and sometimes you just have to brush off and deal with affronts rather than let them distract you from living your own life. Homophobia in the movie was treated as just sort of "out there."

Besides, from what I know about Sweden, it is a much more gay-friendly country than most others, particularly the United States.
