Bewildered at the low rating.

It's only 6.9/10 as I write this, 7 years after release. I thought this was a thoroughly enjoyable film.

(Spoilers follow)

I love that the devil is not portrayed as a bad guy! He is clever, playful, and mischievous, but he serves as more of a guiding force. Meanwhile, the man who had built a sensational facade of altruism was truly corrupt. This line was interesting: "He leads a charmed life, that one. I've been trying to get that bastard for years. I thought I had him this time, but, you know, some prat always seems to come along and rescue him."

Another idea the film made me think about was temptation/gambling/weakness/easy outs and having it come back to bite you. Choices are a big theme and being condemned for one's decisions. Dr. Parny's mirror was all about making right choices, but by the end, he begging "No more choices. No more choices." Also Mr. Nick saying "I mean, she is free, isn't she?".

I wonder about a couple of things: The markings on Tony's head. It appeared to be an important part of the story. Mr. Nick challenges Dr. P. to investigate them. But then they are never explained. And why are the dancing policemen in skirts. Gilliam must be poking fun at them, but I wonder if it's something in particular.

Don’t be bewildered. Fantasy is my favorite genre, but this is self-indulgent crap by an egotistical director. It has some good visuals.

Score: 2.3/10
