Why does it seem like everyone hates this film?

I'm really not that big a fan of Spike Lee, but I think he did a great job with this movie. I'm not going to list a bunch of reasons why people should like this movie, I'm just curious why it seems that a lot of people don't? I'm white by the way, that may or may not be relevant to some.

im gonna keep it short and sweet....IT WAS BORING AS HELL!!!

I loved the movie, and thought it was brilliant. Lots of twists and turns, suspense. A fun ride all the way for me.

I also liked this movie, a lot. I don't know how to explain it but i was totally enchanted by it and i will remember it forever. I thought it was a great film, but i wouldn't really know how to explain why. I am not a movie expert but i know what i like. Don't know why there is so much hate and bad criticism for this movie (and Spike Lee), and reading the reviews i was appalled at how some people are knowledgeable and film literate, and able to write a professional-like film review. Dismantle and dissect it piece by piece until there is nothing left.

But what for? Internet cred? What? Get a life. Isn't it enough to just watch and enjoy the movie and then maybe discuss it with friends over a coffee or something? And concentrate more on your real life issues, family, friends, education, work, etc.. Movies are here just for the entertainment. Where do you get the time to get so film-savvy? Watch so many movies?

And would you relax with all this deep intellectual cinema expertise every once in a while? It's boring. It's just a movie. A good one too. Compared to the 77% of cr4p coming out lately.

Lets just say Mr. Lee should stay out of the War movie making business. Well, at least he tried.

This has the worst acting, direction and production value for any WWII movie I have ever seen and they had $45 Million to work with...

Theatrical feature film regarding the U.S. Army in Europe during WWII was last done with Saving Private Ryan so there was much potential in terms of filling a need for viewers.

There were many actual incidents to draw from regarding the 92nd Division to produce both a good story and still be grounded in history.

But then we have the worse depiction of U.S. soldiers in WWII ever as thus:

1. Incompetent white officers
2. Sympathetic Nazi officers
3. Infighting among soldiers behind enemy lines
4. Sexual liasions while behind enemy lines
5. Indecision among the soldiers. They just camp out in town and do nothing except #4 and #5 above.

The film actual supports the worst stereotypes of black as was believed at the time--that they were children incapable of thinking for themselves.-forgot their mission, interested in sex, fought among themselves...Almost as a Klan version of what would be shown.

The 92nd and the adjacent Brazilian units were relentlessly probed by the Germans due to the latter belief that they were inferior to include a deep penetration attack in January 1945 which nearly succeeded except a black soldier stayed at his post and called in artillery fire on his own position. That would have been an outstanding testament to both the U.S. Army and black americans. Instead we have this.

No,it dosen't--you act as if NO other war film has ever shown these things--half of them do, so don't act like this is the first film that's ever shown it. "Worse depiction of U.S. soldiers in World War II ever as thus"----excuse me?? I think you just didn't know how to process seeing black soldiers portrayed as complex,non-stereotypical characters, that's all. But you said this same junk about RED TAILS, so I'm not even surprised.

reply

Half of them? You are exaggerating. Typical. Well there goes whatever you were attempting to state.

Red Tails was simply awful. Caricatures of actual military professionls are shown on screen.

If you like both then it speaks much of what you consider quality. Which is far removed from more discerning viewers.

Funny you had to stalk through my reviews for the Red Tails one. Pathetic. Have actually blasted or complimented films of all types since I wrote about RT and MSA.

Just for the sake of hating. Look at the boards with a movie directed by Tarantino movies, and people do the exact same thing. They just want to find something to pick apart.

It's very different. For me I remember watching and thinking, is this movie going anywhere? But it came together so I'm glad stuck through and watched.

After reading the replies to your comment I guess I have to 'fess up - from a critical standpoint the movie probably does have some MAJOR issues and in particular the way Lee treated his OWN people - with the infighting, the trash talk about penis size, the gratuitous trip to Louisiana for frosties (WTF was THAT all about?) there were a million better ways to insert a flashback on how our Buffalo Soldiers were belittled and mistreated without resorting to that RIDICULOUS cliché with AWFUL delta accents - way more Mobile Alabama.... and my list could go on FOREVER - carrying that crazy heavy statue head around, making it look like blacks sank themselves into voodoo magic instead of genuine faith -

Had I been looking for a real story on Buffalo Soldiers I would have been HORRIFIED and deeply shocked -

Instead I was mesmerized by the romance in the midst of war, the touching love of a lumbering hulk for a tiny starving boy, a village over whelmed with joy at seeing what they THOUGHT would be their liberators - the romance which made the movie fine for me.

Spike Lee is always trying to be different and there's nothing wrong with that as long as you hit your mark, instead of turning people away. The thing I hated about the movie was that a lot of the movie had subtitles, not only is it distracting when you're trying to watch a movie but the subtitles were too small so it took too long for me to try to figure out and read. I found myself having to rewind each scene several times. Why not just do the movie in English, like everybody else? If I want to read, I'll pick up a book. When I want to sit back, relax and watch a movie, I don't want to have to figure out the lines and get off focused by trying to read some tiny subtitles.

I woke up this way...
