Why can't Renny Harlin just give up?

He makes me ashamed to be a finnish person.

This movie is going to be absolutely horrible, yet some people will go to see it because of the "3D experience".

I can't believe Harlan is getting 70mil for this project. When was the last time he made a profitable movie? That said, I really want The Long Kiss Goodnight 2.

reply

As a Greek, this movie is a disgrace to the myth of Hercules. I'm ashamed this even exists.

reply

Since Harlin's a Finnish person, why doesn't he just finish? Get it, Finnish, finish? Okay. Good night!

I think the producers are happy to get this movie. This is what they ordered and Renny delivered.

Too bad for Renny :/
I know many people do not like him or hes movies but he has done many good actions movies.

reply

This is true. I must be one of the only people who loves Cutthroat Island. I just don't understand how he keeps getting projects when his last successful movie was almost 15 years ago (Deep Blue Sea). Unless I'm missing something.

I love Cutthroat Island too!

Renny is available when some one is needed to manage bigger budget movie. He is like the ad hoc guy in Hollywood.
He gets paid for doing movies from crap scripts.

Still this movie could make money after big screen in dvd, tv etc.

I just noticed that Renny is also one of the producers and even writer ;-)
Im quite sure he didnt waste he's personal money for this project.

+1 for Cutthroat!

Yeah I like Cutthroat Island as well, I think it's a really nice adventure film. Wonder how it would fare as a 3D re-release on the big screen now that the existence of Internet guarantees lots of free publicity and trailer views.

In addition to Cutthroat Island, Harlin has directed some really decent action films such as The Long Kiss Goodnight, Cliffhanger, and Die Hard 2. But seeing how long his draught has lasted, maybe he should retire.

reply

Nope, I also quite enjoyed "Cuthroat Island". Can't say I love it, but it was everything I was hoping for.

Cutthroat Island is great movie. It was not movies fault it flopped. It was sum of many things and copyright owner wasn't the smallest one.

reply

Cutthroat Island was awful. Bad script, bad acting, bad direction, bad movie.

reply

Cutthroat Island is da bomb! One of the best pirate movies. And correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Renny Harlin direct Die Hard or DH 2?

reply

I can't wait for this movie after seeing the thrilling trailer! When I search here for a decent comment, all I read is hatred toward this director. Why is that?? The film not even out yet! How can you people judge a movie like this? Are you all paid cyber trooper to shot down this movie because of jealousy? Or you couldn't get this project? Disappointed that this director was chosen instead of you guys? This director is highly respected by giving us action and fun movies-die hard, long kiss goodnight and my all time favourite deep blue sea..Hercules would be his best work! So people go and see this movie, you won't disappoint in the hand of Renny Harlin!

reply

I think same...Renny has made several great action flicks and I'm sure this will be a great flick.

reply

I think most of the posters on this thread like the director, or a least some of his movies. However, many of his more recent high profile pictures bombed spectacularly, deservedly or not. My question would be how such a director can continue to be successful following such great market failures. My guess would be that there is enough of a profit to be made in these lower budget, direct to DVD/TV movies. Enough to keep working and make more films.

reply

Well I've seen many of his films and only Die Hard 2 I liked (but, Cliffhanger and Mindhunters are watchable on cable when bored) and by the trailer this movie looks like a lot of other good movies (and a TV series) wrapped together, badly. If DBS is your all time favourite something, you should watch more movies. No offense. Go watch this film, write a good review, tell your friends how much you like it, but I don't think I'd see it even if someone paid me the ticket.

I even bet this wasn't screened in advance.

reply

I have to say, I'm with you on if someone thinks "Deep Blue Sea" is the best movie they have ever seen, well, they need to see a lot more movies - and I mean no offence by that, I really don't. I genuinely mean, go forth and watch more!!

He directed some pretty good movies like Die Hard 2, Cliffhanger, Deep Blue Sea, Driven, Mindhunters, The Covenant etc. all good action movies.

The Covenant launched some pretty successful careers: Steven Strait (10.000 BC, City Island, Magic City), Taylor Kitsch (Friday Night Lights, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, The Bang Bang Club, John Carter, Battleship, Savages, Lone Survivor), Chace Crawford (Gossip Girl, Twelve, What To Expect When You're Expecting), Sebastian Stan (Gossip Girl, Black Swan, Captain America), Jessica Lucas (Cloverfield, 90210, Melrose Place, Evil Dead, That Awkward Moment, Pompeii) and Laura Ramsey (The Ruins, Middle Men, No One Lives).

reply

He'll always be a better director than Michael Bay or Brett Ratner.

reply

That's an ironic thing to say, because Ratner is directing the other Hercules movie.

reply

Better than Michael Bay....his box office would completely disagree and disprove that entire statement. Listen, while Bay might direct movies you may not enjoy...many other do... but technically, not many other movies look as good. Just watch Pain and Gain which he made for 25 million and it looks better than other movies that costs a hell of a lot more.

He's a very good technical director, he really knows that side of the business. Give him a really good script and he would do it justice...he usually just goes out and directs for the money...nothing wrong with that.

Harlin could actually use some tips from Bay... and most of his huge movies have bombed. The last movie I liked from him probably was Deep Blue Sea and it was pretty cheesy although enjoyable.

Ridiculous. Boxoffice doesn't prove anything. If it did, Bay would be one of the greatest directors ever: are you making that claim?

reply

I don't think that's what he/she was getting at...

He's a successful idiot, you'd be surprised at how many there are.

reply

Are people still talking about the teleprompter thing from a few days ago? The dude was just having an off moment, we all get that once in a while. And while his movies are not exactly brain food Bay is by no means an idiot.

Proof positive Hollywood is desperate and thinks little of audiences to greenlight projects like this by bad writers, directors and ex-models who can't act. Hercules should be played by a man not a man-boy, and one who can act. The Rock's version looks like it won't fare any better. More crap. It will be more bad writing, directing and Rock can't act. His Fast $ Furious movies are as garbage as Twilight movies.

Darwin, there is just no getting thru a simple point to some people. If you give them an opinion, they'll just disagree everytime.

Technically, there is no way Bay is a terrible director... it's not possible.

People honestly talk about Bay like he's the WORST director ever.... and that's just funny. He's not like Uwe Boll... Who's honestly made maybe 2 watchable films out of TONS. Darfur and Rampage...2 decent films... but no matter what EVER could he handle the workload of Transformers.
