1x07, Kiss of the Spider-Woman

All right, I'll start first with relevant full disclosure. I'm a gay guy. So don't come at me with any shit about being homophobic or not understanding the experience, aight?

A gay bashing? Sigh. So tired, pedestrian, predictable. It's become a cliched trope. That along with the whole coming out story. I understand that these things are done to be inclusive of a marginalized group, and to give hope to young viewers, as those are popular reasons. Fine. Great. But to me they often feel like half-baked ideas by hetero writers. Because, wow, showing that someone had a rough time of it when they came out of the closet, how truly profound. That's always a popular question for straight people to ask about when getting to know you (btw, that just makes you seem entitled, our stories aren't your business just because you chose a misguided way to show interest). Because, well, you know how our society is, so, in all likelihood, how do you think it went for the vast majority of us? Exactly. Not good. Everyone's in uproar and there's usually one family member (often the same-gendered parent) who is extra horrible about it. The more obviously gay you are the worse it is. And the gay-bashing. Another predictable one, to show drama, and that homophobia is everywhere and this can happen to anyone. Anyone gay already knows about this. Because if we haven't had it happen to us (no I haven't but I've been in highly uncomfortable situations), we're probably at least acquainted with someone who has (yes). So it ends up coming off as an attempt to scare young closeted folks into staying there, in the closet. It's just predictable. As soon as we saw Ginger and Bernardo walking outside with only a few minutes left in the episode, I knew exactly what was coming and groaned. My guess is we'll be spared actually seeing the fight, and just see the aftermath at the start of the next episode. And somewhere in there will be a scene where Jorge's dad says something asinine about not going in public in drag, gets yelled at for blaming the victim, and later comes to his senses. Again, it's predictable and it all honestly is a slight blight on the show for me. Again, I get its intent and is from a good place, but be more creative. For me it would honestly be more satisfying if Jorge and Bernardo were attacked but it was honestly just at random and had nothing to do with their sexuality.

To liken it to something else. When Spider-Man: Homecoming was released, I think we all had a collective sigh of relief that we could just jump into the story of him being who he is without having to go through his origin story and watching Uncle Ben die, yet. Again.
