Congratulations on NOT using CGI

Finally a "movie monster" with personality, haven't seen much of those since the 80s. No stupid, badly textured, overly animated cgi, just a gritty, bloody chaos of evil. So refreshing, I was just smiling through all the monster scenes thinking "at last, someone took the time to CRAFT something".

Applause!

It does have a little of CGI, but a lot of practical. It is well balanced.

Great movie.

CGI allows certain freedom in movement that cant be easily accomplished with practical creature fx or puppets unless digital erasing of support wires is used( Terminator 2 did that with the slow motion bike jump into the drainage tunnel during the semi truck chase). Trouble with cgi is that if it isnt textured and lit well it does look artificial, and if it isnt animated very carefully can look weightless and cartoony.
On the other hand prior to CGI you had to either have puppets or stop motion for full body shots. Usually stop motion was not very convincing because you cant get motion blur on objects easily. In the Howling and the Thing 82 they cut out scenes using stop motion for that reason.

I prefer a combination approach like in the Jurassic Park films. Mechanical puppets that can be used as reference to ensure the CGI moves with weight and looks more realistic.

Not the biggest fan of CGI but in this case they should have considered using more. The monster to me was very Muppet-ish and somewhat comical. I just don't get it.

Uhhhh... it didnt use CGI? I assumed it did, since many times the monster looked like pure garbage. Every time it did that SUPER MEGA FAST movement, it looked like rudimentary, amateur quality, CGI. It looked like they had a thing recorded, and then just hit fast forward or something.

Which was also lame, because the monster would then slow down to the speed of an old lady when it was in "practical effects mode".

reply

Sorry, i could not appreciate the bloody chaos, apperently they could not afford a non-drunk cameraman.

also are you one of those nuts that think practical effects are always better?

Applied Science? All science is applied. Eventually.

I dunno; the thing looked CGI to me.
