One line that makes no sense at all

There are lots of things that don't make sense in this movie, obviously but, I've always been bothered by what Etienne says at the end when Mademoiselle ask him if he's ever tried to imagine the "other side". He answers with, "I'm afraid not". I don't know if it's just the english translation but, that doesn't make any sense to me. Are we really suppose to believe that this guy has never tried to imagine the afterlife? Isn't that what their whole lives revolve around? These people have done depraved and monstrous things to innocent young girls purely to find out what happens after we die and yet, he's never tried to imagine it?

I just saw it tonight and in the one I watched the line I think was "Could you imagine" not have you ever imagined. I could have read it wrong but I thought that's what it said so I interpreted it as she was asking something akin to "can you even fathom what is on the other side". I will have to go double check myself to make sure, I could have just read it wrong...but at the very least that translation (if I read it correctly) would make more sense...because I agree that have you ever imagined wouldn't make much sense given the fact these people were so obsessed with knowing about the afterlife.

She says "Sauriez-vous imaginer ce qu'il y a après la mort?", which means "Would you be able to imagine what is there after death?"

So it's more "Are you able to do it" than "Did you ever try to".
