People bash this film, because they're too stupid to understand it. Read through this board and you'll see what I mean.

reply

YEAH, they are all STUPID, that's telling them ! Great reply intelligent one !

understanding is not required to enjoy it
more intelligence will not make you enjoy it more.
you just hate anyone who doesn't agree with your opinions. 😜

I like it. The bar scene is fantastic. I want to be at that bar.

I agree, a lot of posters miss the beauty of the bar scene, the characters are all so flawed like real people from a real small town. Posters talk about the character of Arlene not having a perfect body with her poochy belly and what not and how they think it was weird that she was giving a lap dance, but damn have you ever been in a small town? Men in those places are so into women, they don't ask for perfection, they'll take anything close to attractive. Stuntman Mike would definitely be into her, the whole culture of a small town is about making the best out of a bad situation with your night or your weekend.

There's also the additional aspect of how Arlene reacts to the death proof car. Am I the only one who thinks that she was fascinated by it on a subconscious level? Almost like she knew it would be her doom? We might even speculate that to her it symbolized the adolescent longing for death and as recent scientific studies have indicated: the human brain remains in adolescent mode until a person is 25 years old and I don't think Arlene was older than 25.

I understand what you're saying about small towns, but weren't they in Austin? Not a small town at all.

reply

It isn't, but, isn't it one of those cities where it feels like a small town, because everyone you know there knows everyone you meet there? You know, like Boston.

How many times do they have to tell us before we believe them?

reply

WOW, way to bash small town life and the " desperate " Men unfortunate enough to be doomed to a miserable, small town "life"...

reply

Austin's not a "small town" lol, it's the freaking state capital city!

Population of the greater Austin area approximately 1 million. Freeways, universities, seat of Texas government....

I would also add that Tarantino played up the Texas accent and the guys in cowboy hats too much. In Austin you'd be hard-pressed to find either these days.

Cowboy hats and Texas accents? Too much?

Other than the McGraw boys, I don't recall any stereotypical Texans in the film.

This is news to me. I'm pretty sure the only ones dissin' her body are teenagers. Most adult men prefer women with womanly curves; and Arlene has a really nice derriere in the movie. As far as her "poochy belly" is concerned, so she could maybe lose 3 lbs, whoopee. 85-90% of women would KILL to have her body.

I don't know what "haxed" might mean, but seriously, people bash the bar scene? It's fantastic! Totally nailed how people act in bars. Beautifully done.

And I love the touch of the Baby-Sitting Twins being there.

Oh God, I'm avoiding reading the comments here because out of all QT's work, this is my favourite by a long-shot. And not just because of Zoe Bell.

I know what you mean. I enjoy just about all of his films—but most of them have a lot of weight to them. You watch Kill Bill, and then it needs to breathe a bit, you can't just turn around and watch it again—or at least I can't. His more recent stuff is even more that way in my opinion. But Death Proof is different, it goes down easy, like a southern bourbon. It's the kind of flick I can throw on once a year, maybe even more, like a long-time favourite album you listen to now and then.

It's too bad, really. I came here to discuss all of the quirks and in-jokes in this film. It's a riot, and beautifully conceived. Throw some pot on, spin this disc, and have some fun. But, nope, sad state this board is in. I really don't understand why people bother frequenting boards for film they don't like. I don't think I've ever once gone to a film board for something I didn't like. I toss it and forget it. These people just need to learn to spend time on the things they dig, not the things they hate. Right?

I like the bar scene; so you're definitely not alone.

Black men and a whole lot of *beep* white men have had plenty fun adoring my ass JUNGLE JULIA

It's not my favorite movie and the bar scene had a great atmosphere, but the constant talking annoyed me. It seem forced, but the ending more than made up for the annoying bits. I laughed so hard. It was worth waiting for. Lol

The scene is fine, but it just goes on too long.

I love the entire film. I love the theatrical version and the unrated version. Thankfully I have seen both and enjoyed them immensely. This got so badly bashed here in the UK, with one reviewer giving it 1/5! The best way to watch it, as far as my own opinion is concerned, is back-to-back with Planet Terror and all the fake trailers in between.

reply

Nope, oyu are not alone. I love this Film and the portrayal of strong women in this flick.
