I don't think it would have mattered if Ed Sheeran had performed it as far as the judges were concerned.
Some years ago the UK entry came in at eighth yet the song went on to be a hit all over Europe despite the dodgy scores given at the competition. The contest is nothing more than a stick to beat the UK with. It was always a bit laughable that certain countries showed their affection for one another (Greece and Cyprus) or dislike for one another (take your pick). It's why Terry Wogan resigned as compere.
Was the UK the best entry this year? No.
Was it the worst? No. Yet still it came last. I honestly don't know why we bother.

shareNo, it really isn't. People don't participate in a competition for the sake of taking part. You take part to do your best, but if you are judged on your nationality rather than your talent then it's hardly a fair competition is it?

shareIt's not meant to be a popularity contest though is it? It's a song contest and shouldn't be judged on whether or not you like that country. I mean, I don't particularly like Eminem, but think his song 'Stan' is brilliant. Imagine me saying otherwise just because I don't particularly rate Eminem. As for important for the viewers, why? Just so we know for sure who hates who?
