Death Note

Yup... another American rip-off. Ugh!

It actually reminded me of Tom Riddle's diary in the Harry Potter series. That was the first thing that came to mind when I was watching it anyway.

reply

Except that contained his soul, and was more of a weapon for Tom Riddle himself than the user.

We saw two different movies, I see.
Death Note, most definitely not the first story about a book with mystical powers (see Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets), was very different from Devil's Diary. The Death Note can only kill, and has no adverse side effects on the user, while the Devil's Diary responds to feelings of anger and person gain, and turns the users eerily pale. The Death Note is one of many, and doesn't have the power to attract users. In Death Note, a psychopathic genius (a great character, no less) uses the book to clean up the world and is opposed by the police force. In Devil's Diary, the school outcast has to deal with the demonic effects the diary has on her best friend, a snotty cheerleader, and later herself and an evil priest. The Death Note CAN be destroyed, but the Devil's Diary can't be.
If anything, the Devil's Diary is more like Harry Potter 2. Both diaries cause the people writing in it to do some pretty bad things, there's an actual spirit within both books, and the evil is stopped the same way (destroying the diary).
Come on now. Really, a rip off? Though Devil's Diary doesn't hold a candle to Death Note, it doesn't deserve to be called a rip off. Its just a similar premise.

Actually, if you use the Death Note, you can't go to heaven or hell according to Ryuk.

Do you realize you said in your post that in Devil's Diary it can both not be destroyed ("The Death Note CAN be destroyed, but the Devil's Diary can't be.") and that it can ("Both diaries cause the people writing in it to do some pretty bad things, there's an actual spirit within both books, and the evil is stopped the same way [destroying the diary]). Just saying.

Death Note is 100% better =)

I actually just watched this, (ironically while waiting for Death Note to come on) and yes, I agree, there are definite similarities between the two, but I wouldn't call it a rip off.

The biggest similarity that I found was in the beginning when Ursula and Dominique first find the book. It happened pretty much exactly the same as how the notebook in Death Note was found.

The only other one that I can recall, which is a very tiny similarity in my opinion, would be the fact that it kills people, but as arellebnks said, the diary was capable of more than just killing, whereas the notebook only kills.

I don't really know where I was going with this... just wanted to get my opinion out there I guess... even though it's over a year later :\

...

okay bye.

Oh jesus not this American rip off this anime/manga crap again. Everybody read this ANN's Answerman article:

http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/answerman/2010-07-09

While we accused Devil's Diary of ripping off Deathnote why don't we attack Christopher Nolan because his film Inception looks a lot like the Satoshi Kon's anime movie, Paprika.

Geez, do people accuse a American film of ripping off anime/manga. I watch the movie and there's too many differences from Deathnote:

-In Deathnote, you write the person name down and give it a specific date, the way they died. In Devil's Diary it doesn't seen that way. In Deathnote, the notebook is used to kill off criminal, I don't see any of that in Devil's Diary.

-Deathnote had Shinigami like Ryuk and Rem. I don't see anything like that in Devil's Diary.

-Deathnote, L is a character that tried to solve Kira. Where's a "L" like person in Devil's Diary? oh, that's right I don't see any. I don't see a "Near" in the movie also.

Not a rip-off of Deathnote, if we're going to call it a rip-off of Deathnote. Then let's accused Christopher Nolan of copying off Paprika in his film, Inception. Let's attack George Lucas and The Wachowski Bros because Star Wars and The Matrix took influences from Japanese stuff also.

FYI: Andrew Francis in the movie is a anime VAs and he has voiced various character in Deathnote.

Also, I look at Alexz Johnson face and she does look a lot like (maybe resemble) Misa from Deathnote. At least she can probably play the part if the American remake of Deathnote was to happen. See the image for yourself.

I'm glad to know I wasn't the only one who instantly thought "Death Note". xD Except they make it sound like some kind of hell deal, and not a shinigami's age old notebook.
