Did the original kill the slasher film?

Obviously not since there were plenty of quality slasher flicks after March, 1986, when the original "April Fool's Day" debuted: Friday the 13th Parts VI-VIII, Halloween 4-5, Slumber Party Massacre II, Nightmare on Elm Street 3-5, Hellraiser, Child's Play, Cutting Class, Return to Horror High, Sleepaway Camp II-III, Silent Night Deadly Night Part 2, The Stepfather, etc. All of these movies came out after "April Fool's Day."
