Why is it called Knight and Day?

If their names aren't Knight or Day? I signed onto imdb expecting to see Tom Cruise as Steve Knight and Cameron Diaz as Sun Day. What is this crap!

reply

The film was originally titled "Wichita" as well as "Trouble Man" while it was shooting in Massachusetts, (also filmed in Cadiz and Seville, Spain). Looked and couldn't find the reason.

reply

If you're going to have the word knight replace the word night there better be a knight in there! Either somebody named Knight or an actual Knight from the middle ages. And if the guy's name is Knight then the girl's name has to be Day! That's how puns work!

Still gonna see the movie though cuz it looks great!

reply

The night and day expression is just when to people are totally different, and the name is a play on that, but Cruise is kinda like the Knight in shining armor, so the call it Knight and Day, kinda like it's a buddy comedy. In France it's only called Night and Day, as I guess they don't understand Knight/Night thing.

reply

Yeah, the french don't know the difference between Knight and Night because they're a bunch of retards, right?

Moron.

reply

GhostFace353 made a good point about the French not getting the pun because of cultural/language differences. The Japanese just got Twitter and instead of 'tweet' they say 'mumble.' That should be as clear as night and day.

reply

Just so you know we have the exact same expression in French...Le jour et la nuit. Ok its "Day and night" but its the same meaning...

reply

... and what is French for knight and does it sound like nuit? or is it spelled similar to nuit? if both answers are no (or non) then we have a pun that does not work so ya may as well stick w/ plain ol' Night and Day.

It isn't because you are dumb retards... it's that some things with the French are just a waste of time.

merci, merci beaucoup!

reply

nevertheless i think its dumb retards thing in this case. its not exclusive to French though. every country has their own dumb retards

reply

Have you ever known a smart retarded person?

Pull out a dictionary and have someone look up “redundancy” for you.

reply

Or maybe just because puns don't translate into other languages.

Moron.

reply

> Yeah, the french don't know the difference between Knight and Night because they're a bunch of retards, right?

I guess so.

reply

Ah oui, c'est vrais.

reply

A knight figurine appears in the movie, which is a very weak link to the title.

We know the difference between knight and night.
We know the difference between know and now...
You know we are not stupid.
Knights of the round table. In french :Chevaliers de la table ronde.

The distributors in france have decided to title the movie night and day, but i don't know why...

I have learn english at school like a lot of people.

I don't like when you write that we 're a bunch of retards, it's wrong.

The title of this movie is a " jeu de mot" like " now you know, you know no" is also a "jeu de mot"

reply

Knight in french is Chevalier, that doesn't sound like night either.

reply

Simply put, that isn't what he meant dude. Don't gotta get pissy.

reply

just another case of a horribly titled movie i guess where they force a pun in there like the abysmally titled "made of honor" where the pun again made no effin sense

reply

Well I gotta good feeling about this movie. I'm really bummed that the action comedy genre is pretty much dead. Now we have movies like Pineapple express which claim to be "action" but I'm more interested in action-comedy along the lines of true lies. Now that was a film that defined this genre.

Hopefully, Knight and Day will bring back some of that stuff.

reply

What are you talking about!? Pineapple Express was great and this movie seems like it would be completely awful. I saw another thread for this movie along the lines of a Poor Man's "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" and I thought the exact same thing when I saw the preview. It seems like just another typical crap movie with a horrible plot and horrible dialogue. There is a shortage of movies with original plots and storylines these days. Pineapple Express was funny and did have action, it was funny action, but still action non-the-less, if that's all you're looking for.

reply

too true

...besides Matthew Knight is his real name...

Agreed. Several pages of inattention and pointless argument.

Dean: I am wearing sunglasses at night. You know who does that? No-talent douche bags!

My sentiments exactly.

KNIGHT is labelled on the mailbox at "Roy's" parents house.
Also, while at the airport, "Roy" buys a little knight that he hides
'something' in.

"What time is Recess?"

reply

Yes, apparently, Roy's real last name is knight.

reply

I am so glad they renamed this movie! I've lived in 'Wichita' and it irks me when movies are never filmed in the locations they are named for. I don't know why it would have even been called that, because they never came close to filming in Kansas. Maybe it's his spy name.
Anyway...'Knight and Day' sounds so much better.

Desmond: I'll see you in another life, brother....

reply

they meet at the airport in Wichita. And Diaz's character is from Wichita...

reply

It amazes me that people can write and write and post and post and have no idea what they are talking about and not even care. I worked on this movie and it is true that the title makes almost no sense. However, Tom Cruise's character's real last name IS "Knight" for whatever that is worth. Diaz's character's name is in no way named "Day". It's just a lame attempt at a catchy title and Fox did not seem to care that it did not make any logical sense. Although they do meet at the Witchita airport, Diaz's character is NOT from Witchita but returning back home to Boston from Witchita.

reply

As opposed to “illogical sense”?

Sense REQUIRES LOGIC!!

But it’s only “others” who “have no idea what they’re talking about” which, if you’d like to avoid the grammatical error of a dangling participle, is better phrased “who have no idea whereof they speak.”

reply

I love that they meet in Wichita but the Wichita airport looks nothing like that unless it wasn't in Wichita,KS but an airport in another Wichita.

reply

I've lived in 'Wichita' and it irks me when movies are never filmed in the locations they are named for.

It irks me when people make this complaint as I take it they expect the whole film crew to move to that location for the 3-4 month shoot.

What if the story takes place during different seasons? Do you film some in the summer then come back in the winter?

Say the the location is not suited for filming because it is too small or the lighting is wrong? Do you change the story so that a scene takes place in a different location so you can film there?

These are just some of the reasons films are not always filmed in the locations they are named for, or for that matter, take place in.

reply

Should have been called "The Guy" as in "This is the guy" cafe scene. Anyway, I did see 'Knight' on the old couple's letterbox, but there was no Day to be found in the movie. Weird.

reply

I also wonder where did the concept for the Knight and Day title come from. I am assuming that Roy was June's Knight in shining Armor and the day when the both of them would be together.

reply

[deleted]

I did the same thing and noticed no character names. So now I figure Diaz is a spy too and her code name is Knight and his is Day. Putting up their codenames would give that away. They really tipped their hand int he trailer where Diaz is on the motorcycle backwards firing two fully automatic guns. Another thread ahs it right...It's a poor man's Mr. And Mrs. Smith.

SPOILER BELOW!!!!!!!!!

It isn't revealed until the start of the third act but one of the characters' real last name is KNIGHT.

I think the DAY comes from them taking on another identity and leaving their old life behind.

reply

Watched an advanced preview last night. One of the characters name is Knight and there is a toy knight figurine that plays a key role in the movie. But there is no character named DAY.

reply

I think the Day refers to the fact that they both talk about what they would do "some day"--meaning what their bucket lists are

there is a family named KNIGHT--name on the mailbox outside the house--that shows up more than halfway through--and have insight into a character

but the actor playing Mr Knight--Dale Dyss--does not have that name listed on the credits--has name Jenkins--so I don't know what is going on with that difference...

"...That's the beauty of argument, Joey. If you argue correctly, you're never wrong..."

reply

I think the Day refers to the fact that they both talk about what they would do "some day"--meaning what their bucket lists are
That's what I thought :D

"I think the DAY comes from them taking on another identity and leaving their old life behind"

what the hell??? did you not read any of the other posts?

reply

I actually didn't know it was possible to NOT understand this reference. I think it's pretty clever and simple, unlike most idiotic movie titles nowadays.

reply

I agree with you McDinky. It is perfectly obvious where they get the reference. Tom Cruise is the knight or has the name Knight and they just threw "day" in there for no other reason than because they thought it would be cute or something.

reply

Saw it this weekend. I figure it was just hastily named. No "day" references.

reply

Should be called "Crash & Burn"

SHUT THE *beep* UP DONNIE

reply

hahaha good one

Because Killers Part 2 would have been box office suicide.

please watch the movie before saying the title doesn't make any sense because there are plot twists that make things more understandable.

I did watch the movie. Maybe I'm slow, but only half of the title makes any sense to me as I write this (unless it was just to take the other half and get a pun on the posters).

I see that this movie impressed you enough to get you to make your first post ever on IMDb. What did you like it about it?

reply

i didn't even think about how this is my first post ahah i just searched imdb because i was reading a blog post about the title and read the comments about it because i was intrigued about the title myself. i think you might be right when you say they just used half the title about the movie and the rest to make a pun for the poster.

reply

Must admit that it was your first raised a few questions. Believe it or not studios actually send in people to pump on movies right about when they open and they tend to not be regular posters....you understand.

But after looking at your blog, I know it was just coincidence.

BTW -- real nice photos. You have talent.

reply

ahah didn't know they did that, but yeah. now i get why it was suspicious.. but no, i have nothing to do with the industry and have no particular interest in this specific movie. i registered in 2007 only because i thought it would be interesting to read some of the comments made about the movie and see other people's point of view, but i never commented for no special reason

thank you :)

reply

My apologies as well jo. Glad you understand why we said what we said. It seems to be happening alot on this board and sometime good people get caught up in it. You're obviously NOT one of the people who come here to attack anyone who doesn't share their opinion.

Thanks for being understanding, take good care and again, my apologies!

reply

no problem :) i actually find it very interesting to read other people's opinions because sometimes i end up seeing something i missed before reading their comments. don't worry about it

reply

Another one who just registered this minute!! This is freakin' hilarious!!

Damn....you people are so OBVIOUS!!

...and jstang is correct. The "Day" part of the title makes no sense.

reply

«Another one who just registered this minute» don't really get your point about this, but i agree with the last part of your comment

reply

Atleast see the movie first before concluding the "Day" part of the title doesnt make any sense. Of course if you've seen the movie and still stand by your statement, to each their own.

reply

I've seen the movie and don't understand it. Why don't you put "spoilers" on your reply and explain it to me. And yes, I get the "Knight" it is the Day I don't get other than the pun.

Well for me it must be reference to the "some day" dialogue of the movie. It's about the day in which Roy and June finally gets to do what they always wanted to do.

reply

Well for me it must be reference to the "some day" dialogue of the movie.
I can see that, but completely missed the connection to that one line otu of so many. So did a lot of folks judging from this thread and the reviews. Maybe it just wasn't clear enough?

reply

That's one of the more important lines, it's there at the start of the movie and gets mentioned again at the end.

reply

Cashing in on the audiences' unconscious, tangential association with The Dark Knight.

reply

I'm surprised that one of the cast isnt a vampire. Cruise needs as many tangential associations to popular movies as he can get.

What a load of L Ron Hubbard!!!

reply

The lone vampire fighter pilot in the USN who's also an occasional NASCAR driver and who has even stopped an alien invasion previously.

reply

The name "Knight" is in it! Roy Miller is just Cruise's undercover name. His real name is "Matthew Knight"! Maybe some of you should watch the movie first before making assumptions that nobodys name is Knight... Not too sure about the "Day" part but who cares anyways...

reply

It s a Rom com ation movie

It is made to appeal to girls knight fantasy .

tom cruise is the White knight and cameron is the poor damsel in distress.
Hollywood is still looking for the perfect cash cow

50% Male 50% female =perfect box office

in reality male get bored by the lame PG-13 action and the rom com
Girls hate the explosions every 10min
= to 3,8M$ the first day

reply

Yeah, there's really no way to explain the title without giving out spoilers like the above post.
