For me the treatment of Iceman was a bit too hagiographic. I liked him but at times felt he was too good to be true. Maybe it is just me becaue I felt the same way about Dick Winters in BoB.

Captain America was the polar opposite, he was portrayed as being too manic to be functional. Even knowing it was non-fiction I struggle to belive CA could have made it thru Iraqi Freedom behaving like he did.

Anyways, I really liked some of the minor characters. The pure dodginess of Meesh was great, always telling them what he thought they wanted to hear - except for that bit about jihad he let slip.
The helmet losing guy storyline was pretty good too. He eventually gets his guys shot at buy wearing that painted Iraqi helmet.
Sixta seems like a nut until the end when you find out he is just doing what he can to keep the guys morale up. You suddenly start to understand and respect him. Gave the guys a feee pass on the hooch too that night.

Favorite:

- Ray Person. He brought the series alive. 'Nuff said. I can relate to him.
- Espera. I just liked his personality.
- Nathaniel Fick. He didn't always follow orders when the orders were bad. He thought about the safety of the troops.

Least favorite:

- Rudy. He always seemed like a cocky douchebag, especially at the end.
- Captain America. Always seemed like had seen way too many cheesy warmovies.
- Trombley. Isn't it just obvious?

Sergeant Antonio Espera. I like his laid back demeanour and his speeches on the 'white man' which cracked me up. I thought he was the toughest character in the series, due to him being the most humane and in control. And that makes sense when you consider where he grew up. A shame there wasn't more of him.

This is in terms of the television series and not the book.

Favorite: Garza. I like mellow, but deadly dudes. Not the whiners or self-involved types who think they are smarter than they are. That scene where Fick talks about how the Syrian was just a college student before was completely misguided. What were the 9/11 hijackers before the mass murder? Seemingly well-educated normal people. Only a true fanatic would cross the border to wage jihad.
Runner-Up: Manimal. I like the old school bad asses too.

Least Favorite: Doc, hands down. Seriously, what the f--k was he doing in the military, much less Recon? Talk about a malcontent. He was beyond self-righteous and terrible for morale. I read that the real Corpsman said that it was entirely fictional drama and not accurate at all, which leads me to believe he was really embarrassed by the Hollywood anti-war portrayal. And a couple of good scenes don't make up for being a major downer and buzzkill.
Runner-Up: Q-Tip. Wiggers are beyond annoying.

Godfather was my favorite.
He seemed like a very genuine person; you could tell that he was really fond of his battalion and even more fond of war in general.

Least favorite would have to be Trombley, his character was simply irredeemable.

How can anyone pick Sixta as their least favorite. Did you not see him wink at gunny Wynn after the letters were handed out? He was doing his job, and as Pappy said, he excels at it. Plus "THAT KEVLAR WASN"T YOURS TO LOSE!!!" is *beep* brilliant.

Favs: Iceman / Fick / Poke / Doc / Ray
Least: The usual... Encino Man, Capt. America, and Gunny Griego

Forget Jesus, the stars died so that you could be here today.

Favorite: Ray; "Can you believe that *beep* retard is in charge of people?"

Least: Encino Man; "And you should be really mad at them."

Its times like this that I’m reminded of my father’s last words: Don’t son, that gun is loaded!

reply

Rudy, Ray, Colbert, and Fick.

Though I have to ask the guy who said they didn't like Rudy. How the hell did he act like a cocky douche bag. Seemed like the nicest of the marines. Plus he forgave Ray when they got into the fight which Ray started.

Always remember actions speak louder than empty words

Favorites would probably be Fick - seemed like a strong platoon leader, good moral compass and willing to stand up for what he believed in, despite the potential ramifications.

In a close second would definitely be Sixta. Having a father that was once a Regimental Sergeant Major, I guess I have a particular affinity for the billet/appointment. Sure Sixta came off as abrasive, loud-mouthed and ill tempered, but hell, that's part of the job description.

Least favorite, definitely Captain Schwetje. I've never met the man personally so I don't know how much of him was fictionalized in the show for dramatic effect, but having served in the Army, I've met his types before. You see guys like that everywhere in civvie-street too- Peter Principle types who've achieved a level of rank/authority beyond their actual ability. Bad combination in the military.

"Tonight....you."

Fick/Trombley

Trombley is most probably a sociopath.

"Trombley is most probably a sociopath."

...yeah...but he's our sociopath...

Then what the *beep* are you doing here in the first place?

Doc Bryan / Encino Man or Captain America

Doc has to be fav because unlike Iceman, Kocher and Nate he more often than not just told people what he thought of them. You never heard Nate talk to Encino Man the way the Doc did.

as for Least Fav, it's a tough one because the show goes to great lengths to make the deplorable characters also very annoying. Sure, Godfather was a douchebag of the highest order, Casey Kasem was the equivalent of a high school girl in terms of bitchiness, Trombley was a little amoral freak and Sixta was just a fully licensed dick. But Encino Man was just so.... irritating. He was so damn dumb. He had nothing in his head seemingly other than orders and ordering. But on the other hand Captain America was seemingly insane albeit funnier to see. Then again he is actually a cold blooded murderer and would've seemingly killed two hostages had it not been for his babysitter Kocher keeping Cap in check.

Doc Bryan was a Navy SARC. Those guys are always pretty aggressive and outspoken, especially if someone's screwing with the well being of their Marines. Fick, or any other Marine for that matter, didn't have that luxury.
