A Christmas Tale and The Royal Tenenbaums

Anyone else see quite a few similarities between the two?

reply

Came to the forum to see if anyone else thought this. The first director this reminded me of was Wes Anderson, not just the wealthy family dynamics, but the life the film and it's characters seem to have. So far, brilliant film. The characters aren't extreme charactertures and there aren't as many references to cinema(or they're not as obvious) and also not as much emphasis on music but still like Anderson's work.
Also Truffaut, because of the lightness despite the melodramatic situation.

The use of music, the "giftedness/underachievement" of the family members, the family coming together over a health scare, the editing... I did see many simiarities, yes.

this one was far worse than royal tenenbaums... poor writing, very pathetic and with many drivels (Junon's life expectance calculation, the rift between Henri and Elizabeth, Elizabeth asks her very old father why he doesn't look for something better than his dye factory, the relationship between Sylvia and Simon, etc etc).

There are some interviews out there with the director, who gives a big tip of the hat to Wes Anderson. Similarities are purely intentional.

Here is an interview with Desplechin where he speaks to the influence of Wes Anderson: http://www.stopsmilingonline.com/story_detail.php?id=1255
