Steve Martin??

How comes a light food comedy figure like Steve Martin into writing/producing an issue like that? I liked the movie and its explosive power but when I saw Steve Martin in the credits I was questioning my sanity!

reply

1. It could very well be a whole other Steve Martin.
2. If it was the comedy actor: lighthearted comedy is his acting persona, that doesn't mean he has to be like that in real life.

reply

1. It is this Steve Martin
2. I'm not talking about real life, I'm much more impressed that he can be such sophisticated.

When I saw the credit, I did think "Was it Steve Martin, the comedian?" It truly is him then.

reply

Steve also did Shopgirl... which is not quite as mature as this, but was certainly a departure...

Exactly, I think that Steve's comedic work might have led people to think that he's some bumbling comedy guy, not capable of anything else.

He's clearly a very smart guy, and I'm pleased that he was able to get a movie like this made.

there's a saying that it takes a smart man to act like an idiot... which, when it comes to comedy, i've come to believe it. when you watch his movies you see how clever his idiocy is. (that's kind of confusing, but you know what i mean.)

haha... well, how 'bout this one? i found it back in high school and it stuck. though, not the name of the fellow who said it... rochefoucald, or something like that... maybe... anyway, it's "the height of intelligence is the ability to conceal it."

I just saw the movie last night on DVD and I wrote it off thinking it was another Steve Martin. Then I come here, and I was like you! Gotta give the man credit. He did, after all, start off as a writer.

great writer then. i love this movie.

I thought I was the only one. lol That is what i get for making an assumption. I would have never thought.

Steve Martin was perfectly cast in "The Spanish Prisoner". Mamet film from 1997. An understated, solid little psychological thriller.

Don't forget he's a Helluva musician, too. Terrific banjo player. Face it - the guy is MULTI-TALENTED BIG TIME!

And, if you don't agree, well.....ex-cuuuuuuuuuuuuuse.......me!

It is the funny man Steve Martin...Bcos he is associated with producer Ashok Amritraj, and they both worked together on this film. But I was surprised myself that he could turn up something like this. Kudos.

Steve Martin is a writer. A VERY good one.

Not a single 'VERY good' writer on this planet is a one-trick pony.

But to answer your question, my guess is he thought it would be a good idea for a story. It probably popped into his head during a fever dream, or while he was sitting on the sofa eating nachos.

Or maybe he thought it was an important issue that needed addressing.

The fact is, the serious Steve Martin has been with us since the '80's, approx' since he made "Father of the Bride" and "Planes Trains and Automobiles".

He has been studiously, diligently fostering his dignified persona in the public eye for at least the last 20 years, so his name on this movie should be no surprise.

I think we saw the last of the "wacky" Steve Martin when he made "The Pink Panther", and his heart wasn't in it then. He knew the "Wild and Crazy Guy" routine couldn't last for long and he wanted to have a viable, long lasting career.

Reminds me of when I saw Cheech Marin (of Cheech and Chong fame) on Jeopardy! in a suit and tie, and getting all the right answers. I was totally shocked. I had all their records, but it was time time for him to move on.

Steve Martin wrote the short story on which this movie is based. In the story four terrorists are tricked into boarding a bus, each having a bomb. This was done to minimize the damage they would have done if they had detonated them in separate places. Steve Martin has been a very versatile writer for a long time. He's written theatre as well as film. Because his comic persona is so strong, that's how many of us think of him. He's actually a true artist with many with many layers.

Whoa---didn't know Steve Martin co-wrote this film---still haven't seen it yet, even though it came out years ago---it dosen't seem to have been any kind of a box office hit,and seems to be forgotten, which is why I decided to look it up. But, yeah, Martin has always struck me as not ever really being your typical comedian---he's shown himself to be a man of many talents---that is what has always made him such an interesting guy to watch, no matter what he's doing. Loved his film L.A. STORY, a weird, offbeat comedy with some philosophical elements squeezed in between the madness---one of his more unique and definitely underrated films.
