I enjoyed this film a lot but....

There were definitely things that could have been done better.
First off, the kid playing the main character was absolute perfection; it's hard to imagine the audience not instantly falling in love with him. He was simply brilliant and at times heartbreaking.
That being said, my biggest issue with the film was its length. Two hours and 45 minutes long? It needed to be cut by at least 45 minutes, and possible one hour. The musical montages could have been shortened; they just seemed to go on forever. Also, the film lost focus and became preachy about halfway through (basically when new art teacher came onto the scene). Those long preachy scenes with the art teacher telling everyone what was going on went on WAY to long. I know the actor playing the art teacher is probably a big star in India, but the movie belongs to its young star, and when he suddenly leaves the scene and the adults predominate the film, it seriously damages the film. So, cut about an hour out of the film, shorten the musical numbers and the preachy scenes, and keep the focus on the kid.
But I still loved this movie and found it incredibly moving.

Aamir Khan has to make himself the center of every movie. You probably won't be surprised he also directed and produced this one.

I've enjoyed several Bollywood musical films, but you're right, most of them are too long. They're like two movies for the price of one, and they have either a weak first half or a weak second half. This story was not suited for the typical Bollywood format.
