Why no movies about Hitler's rise to power?

The only movie I can remember being done about the early years of Hitler in Vienna(1909-1913) was Max(2002). I'm currently reading William L. Shirer's "The Rise and Fall of the 3rd Reich". Now someone should make that into an epic trilogy.

Try the tv series - Hitler - the rise of evil.

Not sure about Shirer's book - it's a bit out of date - some inaccuracies. Kershaw's Hitler is much better, and the 'rise of evil' is based on his books.

Though Kershaw disassociated himself from the TV series because there are some inaccuracies (ie Hitler beating his dog) but it's better than nothing.

His rise to power wasn't all that amazing. Here's a good summary:

1) He sucks at art so he joins the military
2) Germany gets it's butt handed to them in WWI.
3) Hitler blames Jews for economic hit Germany takes after WWI.
4) Hitler writes a book that under normal circumstances would be ignored.
5) Hitler runs for office and then uses the Reichstag fire as propaganda.
6) Hitler gets stupid and invades Poland.
7) QED.

Don't forget that he didn't even win the election.

what makes it fascinating and the Robert Carlyle does a German Begbie / Hitler: The Rise of Evil is interesting in that film wise it is a relatively unexplored area.Esp concerning his niece which probably explain's a lot about him.

Why a average man can rise to such power and be 'loved' to an absolute by his people (which while partly fear, he was Godlike to a lot of that time period German's). Remember the Nazi's where in power for as long as the War beforehand, and existed prior to that. Film's on WW2 are like Star War's 1st film, here's the bad guy's like the Empire, what is interesting is how the Empire came about, unfortunately that was called the Phantom menace.
By concentrating just on 1939-1945 you do ignore a lot of the history, they didn't just appear when they invaded Poland.

You forget that he launched a coup d'etat in 1924 in Munich and botched it up. then being arrested and convicted of treason and going to jail.

reply

And by "jail" you mean a very comfortable countryside home that he spent a year or two at writing his book.

reply

No, it was a jail. Not a hellhole jail, there certainly being worse facilities, but a state run jail nonetheless. It was called Landsberg and situated in Bavaria. He spent 264 days in prison there.

No one contests that his time there was comfortable as jail time goes. He was allowed gifts, unlimited books, visitors and treated with kids gloves if not respect and admiration by guards and prison officials. This had nothing to do with the jail facilities themselves being set up for a pleasant stay, but because Hitler had backing from ideologically sympathetic officials in the Justice ministry and other influential people. They made sure that his stay there was as undemanding as possible, when in fact as punishment for treason and as a non German citizen, he should have been deported and refused entrance back into Germany.

As an indication of Landsberg being a functioning prison and not a countryside home, after the war, Nazi war criminals were held there by American occupation authorities. Maybe as a sort of allegorical remembrance ...

It still functions as a Bavarian run prison facility.

Hmm, that documentary I watched must have embellished a few things. Thanks for the clarification.

Anyway, yeah, I'm guessing there's no movie about Hitler in this fashion because nobody wants to make Hitler the protagonist of their movie.

The tv mini series THE NIGHTMARE YEARS showed the rise to power of the nazis, and was based on books by Shirer.
I thought it was very good,it is about 20 years old or more but is still on dvd I think.

reply

I can't remember the name of it but there was a two night miniseries about his rise to power that was on one of the major networks around 10 years ago or so. I remember watching it and there there was a lot of controversy around it being aired.

reply

There is enough material already about his rise. A major studio film won't be made on the subject because the potential audience is not there for a movie in which Hitler will succeed in his ambitions. A film about his rise will have the misfortune of not including the happy ending of his failure and death. It will leave him set up with over a decade of doing pretty much what he wants in the timeframe after the movie is over. Unless, as you suggest, it was a trilogy which continues. Otherwise, I'd prefer letting his rise remain for documentaries and probably many others would as well.

It might make too many people think/wonder what really happened between the Entente vs Germany at the end of WW1 and up to, say, 1925. Or rather, a relatively few would initially voice the concerns and many others would join in the chorus demanding all the truth/facts be made public.

The Entente wouldn't come off looking so innocent as the (jew dominated) education institutions have led us to believe. And, worse for the proponents of conventional wisdom, a new assessment of the reality of the lead up to WW2.

There is another one with the title "Mein Kampf", the name of his autobiography. That translates into English as My Struggle.
