It's Connecticut stupid

Three of the key films about having your soul sucked out of you are set in Connecticut.

Revolutionary Road, The Ice Storm and The Swimmer.

Coincidence? No. Having worked there (I lived in NYC and reverse commuted), there is no other place in the United States that will make you feel like an automaton and literally suck the life out of you.

reply

Don't forget The Stepford Wives.

reply

Thank you, makes my automaton point.

I would also add SECONDS (1966)

reply

I like making Stepford Wives comparisons. Sort of a unique situation, people WANTING to conform. I think most of us would rather identify with Randall McMurphy from Cuckoo's Nest.

reply

I think you give Connecticut too much credit. Remember the center of the universe is NYC so a lot of films are made there or its surrounding areas. But trust me - there were and are many, many other homes from coast to coast with people like Frank and April. But who wants to watch a story about two people from Cincinnati or Toledo?

John Lennon was threatened with deportation in the 70's due to his political stances and minor drug busts. He was questioned why he was fighting so hard to stay in New York when a man with his money could live any where in the world. He said "If I lived during the time of the Roman empire, I would want to live in Rome. Since I live in this time I want to live in New York City."
