Who thought Amy wetting herself was disturbing?

The scene of her being beaten up was bad enough, but what was the point of showing her peeing herself. Was is just to make it look realistic? I had no problems with this but my girlfriend was quite disturbed by it.

I loved what it led to. I won't type it here because it's a spoiler. But seeing that occur afterwards made my day : )

Spoiler warning, anyone? Come on!

I believe it was trying to move past the "Hollywood glamour" of their mainstream violent scenes/movies. Whenever you see someone in a fight in most movies, punches get thrown, people may bleed, but generally the scene is not so bad in an emotional or visceral way. Real violence is different. You go into shock, you lose control of your bodily functions due to stress/shock/pain (and a person has a strong chance of evacuating themselves during death, which Amy was likely very close to/experiencing at that moment). Real violence is ugly, messy, and disturbing.

reply

I did. Up until that point, there had been something slightly fictitious about the violence depicted in the film, but when Amy urinated 'sh!t got real (no morbid pun intended)'.

Listen, it's a GOOD thing you're disturbed.

Reading some of the posts here, I get the feeling some people were turned on.

And that's REALLY disturbing.

But not all that unusual.

Try the book, if you want to understand what this story is trying to express. Thompson was an amazing writer. And as Stephen King once wrote about him, he just did not know where to draw the line. He doesn't seem to have even SEEN the line. Yeesh.

I get that--and actually, that's not in the novel. He doesn't spit in either woman's face. Can't say I care for that choice. But I doubt the movie is any more disturbing than the book. I think if you don't want to be disturbed, stay away from Jim Thompson stories.

I don't think I could bring myself to read the book :/ The movie scenes were so incredibly visceral and disturbing (I have to admit, about half way through the very first beating, I started crying) that if I had to imagine these things happening in my mind as I was reading the book, that would be even worst...

reply

It's almost a cliche in movies at this point. But it was amusing when he slipped in it

reply

I agree the scene was disturbing but when she peed herself I was disturbed to the core :(

You watched a movie in which two women get graphically brutally beaten to death and someone peeing themselves is what disturbed you?

You have problems.

reply

Eh-Ross, you do realize that we're speaking in context with the entire scene, right? As in, prior to her peeing herself, he smacked her one in the stomach. The graphic pain and peeing were just all the more disturbing. Nobody is arguing that two women being beaten somehow is less disturbing than just someone having a pee.

reply

Amy wetting herself was very gross and upsetting indeed; it's the kind of startling realistic touch a lot of other movies tend to shy away from showing.
