Not appropriate for small children

Took our kids to see it today. This film is not, IMHO, appropriate for young kids. The "music" scenes (if that' what you can call hip-hop) glorify rap, and the boob-jiggling dancers are not appropriate for a kids movie.

Don't get me wrong; if thats' your thing, enjoy. I for one felt mislead about the content of the movie based on the trailer. But, they got my money and that's what counts, right?

your kidding, right?

I thought this movie did the opposite of what the OP says. Those chipmunks clearly were not happy with that lifestyle and wanted to be at home with Dave and with rules being kids and loved in their family and sing songs that were them.. not just what the evil music industry was trying to make them sing.

reply

HMM. FIRST IT WAS OLD PEOPLE COMPLAINING ABOUT JAZZ AND WANTING CLASSIC. THEN COMPLAINING ABOUT ROCK AND WANTING JAZZ. THEN COMPLAINING ABOUT RAP AND WANTING ROCK. THEYRE JUST NOISES. GET OVER IT. ALSO I HAVE A FEELING THAT SOMETHING LIKE OLD PEOPLE COMPLAINING ABOUT COUNTRY MUSIC AND WANTING RAP MAY BE IN THE FUTURE

Next thing you know they'll complain about ALL CAPS and want all lower case.

From what I read into the Original Poster, he is not complaining about the EXISTENCE of "the next generation's style of music" (and the questionable culture it involves) but rather that a movie like this would include that stuff without it being "necessary".

Search online video sites for "Frank Zappa Crossfire" -- as he said, "It's just words."

Oh, wait, but nowadays it's a whole LIFESTYLE, not just suggestive lyrics or whatever the typical "morally offended" folks complain about -- so maybe the OP isn't completely off his rocker.

A lot of people's problems with Rock and Jazz back in the day had just as much to do with the lifestyle associated with the music as the music itself. Rock was associated with gangs and juvenile delinquency and jazz was associated with heroin and marijuana use.

So associating all hip hop with one particular lifestyle is basically the same thing.

The hip hop music in Alvin is totally inoffensive unless you find the existence of the genre as a whole offensive.

What I find insane with this thread is all the GENERALIZATIONS made about Hip Hop and Jazz and Rock. Sure there are a bunch of dumbass, mindless and spineless corporate-crafted IMBECILES misrepresenting those genres of music, however, again, they are MISREPRESENTING (key word) those genres. I don't know what movie the original poster was watching, but there ARE NO boob-jiggling dancers in the movie, and the performance scenes certainly are not like those crappy, materialism-infested, sexism-riddled imposter productions masquerading as Hip Hop videos on MTV, VH-1, BET, and other mainstream outlets. Watch the movie again. I've seen it 5 times now, as my Wife and 2-year old Daughter, oddly enough, have gotten me into it, much like they got me into Noggin.

I bet the original poster has never heard of KRS-ONE, Blackalicious, Michael Franti & Spearhead, John Coltrane, Wayman Tisdale, Duke Ellington, Gerald Albright, Heart, Stevie Nicks, Bonnie Raitt, Eric Clapton, and several of the MANY other positive, more realistic portrayals of Hip Hop, Jazz and Rock. Then again, he probably doesn't care given all the disproportionate MAINSTREAM MEDIA SPOTLIGHT given to the materialistic, bling-bling, smackyo@#$%!-up dolts who parade around on MTV, VH-1, and radio stations owned by companies such as Clear Channel, Emmis, and Radio One.

I've been watching Alvin and The Chipmunks with my Wife and 2 1/2 year old Daughter and while the midriff-baring shirts of the singers in the club was maybe a little mature, the movie OVERALL isn't a terrible choice for a young child. Then again, people have a right to their opinion - even if it generalizes and STEREOTYPES a whole genre of music they DON'T know enough about, to even be qualified to comment on - and that - IS MY TWO CENTS.

God forbid a parent wants cares about their children. Does making fun of people with souls entertain you?

reply

No, but making fun of people with a sense of morals straight out of the 50's does make me happy. Come on people! This is 2008! If the fact that women have breasts is offensive to you, move to the Middle East where the whole body is hidden. This is a children's movie. I am sorry if you do not think this movie is appropriate for your child because I have yet to find a child who did not laugh hysterically at the "raisin" scene. Seriously, what do you let your child watch if you think dancing women with large breasts are offensive? God people, wake up and jump into the 21st century!

reply

[deleted]

nope. the op is not kidding. my b-i-l feels the same way about this movie as the op for the same reasons as the op.

reply

I hope you are kidding.

If it was oh so inappropriate for your children, and you really cared, you would of done more research on the film before taking your children to go see it. It's rated pg. If you have such a hang up over PG content, take them to the movies strictly rated G.

I'm sure they see worse things in commercials between SpongeBob and Fairly Odd Parents.

reply

Are you serious? Those dancers were fully clothed, bare midriffs were the closest to nudity.

reply

[deleted]

i agree with you, raisincain! and don't forget the maid!

reply

It's really not even that serious! If you think the maid in the mini skirt is bad, wait until your kids get into high school. It makes life seem like a piece of cake.

But seriously. I would definitely take my friend's five-year-old brother to see this. And yes, there are probably worse things in between commericals of their favorite, "wholesome" cartoon shows. I love this movie and saw plenty of children there with smiling faces. It's not going to change their views on life because they've seen an attractive person cleaning a house. I've seen things exactly like that on cartoon network and nickelodeon before. If you don't believe me, watch it yourself.

This movie is definitely okay for children!

Jeez.

reply

How about seeing the movie first then deceide if it's appropriate for "YOUR" child? Then you can rent it when it comes out of video and watch it together and explain anything you find objectionable.

By the way the worst thing about bringing a 5 year old is not being able to keep them quiet and civil during the movie. Them getting up and running around isn't great either.

reply

I don't get the beef with this movie? I mean, come on people, I find most of those cartoon these people let their children watch more innapropriate then this movie. If you're going to complain about this movie...ok what about on spongebob where patrick was dressed as a girl or when sandy wears a bikini if you're so big on "skin" being shown...oh and what about on fairly odd parents when the toothfairy is in a bathing suit? i mean, come on, this is stuff that my two year old nephew sits down and watches every now and then because it keeps him quiet...you don't see me busting down nickelodean's doors although i do find some of the stuff on those cartoons objectable.
Life's a cow, milk it for all it's worth.

reply

Its fine for small children, i mean they were only dancing its not like they are naked, ur over reacting slightly!

reply

your children are going to grow up to be sex-crazed serial killers whether you like it or not.

reply

We were at the movies to see A&TC with our kids (9 yrs & 12 yrs) & my nephews (4 yrs & 6 yrs). The Kids had a ball and were all happy and sang the tunes. I found the movie rather boring with some good jokes. But I would never hestitate to take children to see this movie. There was absolutely nothing wrong!

you and the OP must be members of religious sects (I refuse to call them denominations) where the women never cut their hair, wear nothing but dresses, and their dresses must have high collars/ be ankle length and have at least 3/4 length sleeves.

reply

I would never hold anything against a person for filtering what their kids watch, I do think however that this society is seeing way too much pussification. I grew up in the 80's myself and remember watching Alvin and the Chipmunks on Saturday mornings. I also remember watching Bugs Bunny, Popeye, and numerous other cartoons that are now considered too violent and were pulled off the air. I mean really. All the kids that watched the road runner outfox the cayote didn't grow up and start strapping rockets on their backs! So I think its safe to assume that your child seeing a maid wont turn him into a pimp.

reply

Pussification is a word I too have been using for years to describe what's been happening since the 90s. I grew up more so in the 90s but I was plenty old enough in the mid to late 80s to remember just how things changed rather quickly from one decade to the next. I just wish I was born five to ten years earlier so I could have been a teenager in the 80s instead of the mid to late 90s. I would have been a lot closer to my brother's age too, but that's a different subject.

Actually, now that I've taken a second to think about it, maybe this all did start in the 80s but didn't grab hold until the 90s. I remember stuff such as people complaining about the violence of cartoons like He-Man (never mind the show being a toy commercial basically) and his use of the term "bone head" in either promoting name calling or maybe they, using perverted logic like a lot of adults do to find hidden meaning in things, though of "bone head" to, for whatever reason, be a hidden insult referring with bone being a substitute for another slang term for a certain part of the male anatomy.. >_>

Okay, I'm getting way off subject here...

Seriously, the most offensive thing about this movie isn't the content of it, it's Jason Lee's being horribly miscast for what could have only been just a payday. Though maybe he was actually a Chipmunks fan? Nah, I'll stick with it being a payday.

reply

Dude, I know a parent like you who was just WAY to overprotective. Everything her kids did was too dangerous! too risky! my poor child's virgin eyes! Yeah...her girls are now the high school sluts...partying, drinking, drugs. I'm just saying, let them breath man!

"IMHO!"

sorry that you feel that way. I honestly don't know what you're worried about though, Your kids have probably seen breasts before.

Stand Alone Rant this has nothing to do with Raisincain:Jesus, what is up with this society we live in today, why is it so worried over nothing?

It's not like kids seeing boobs at a young age will grow up to be a rapidt.

i see where the original poster is coming from. i guess i didn't think about that. however, i would think a tiny kid would still be concentrating on the animated singing and dancing furry animals. i know i probably would have been at that age.
