Other great shows that never stood a chance...

Felt like having a pity party with myself tonight after watching a past Journeyman episode I had DVR'd a few months ago.

I'll miss it...I really will. Remember the first or second episode when Dan buries something in what would later become his backyard patio? He then goes back to his present and proves to his wife that he's time traveling. She asks, "Will you come back to me?" and he replies, "Every time..." I almost started bawling when I saw that scene.

My wife couldn't get into the show and it made me think of all the other shows I've watched and made a sincere commitment to, only to see them cancelled after one or two seasons. Remember "The Others"---a show about people with esp and other psychic gifts? It starred the girl with short red hair and freckles who's on Law and Order. Cancelled! Early Edition (mentioned here on another thread.) was another nice family-oriented show that I found to have clever storylines. Millennium---though darker in nature---lasted three seasons, but I always felt that the actors---especially Lance Henriksen, were underrated. Chris Carter (creator of the X-Files) was the show's creator and admitted to not having the time to oversee both Millennium and X-Files as the seasons progressed.

There was a show about a wizard that was on last year for one season. I forgot the name of it, but it was pretty good. British actor played the character of "Harry something or other". As a native Chicagoan, I was disappointed that the show didn't get better quality shots of the city even though they filmed in Canada, but that was probably its worst offense.

Even "The Cosby Mysteries" was pretty good and didn't last long.

I find that with a wife and child, I rely more on television and the Internet for my entertainment since I'm limited in my ability to go out like I did in my pre-parent days. I just can't believe all of the reality-t.v. crap that gets top billing...and like rap music, it never ends! You think all of this stuff has a certain shelf life, but they keep thinking of new reality shows to usurp the intelligent programming like Journeyman.

I wonder if we would have been more diappointed and heartbroken had Journeyman been cancelled after a second season...? Had the relationship progressed to our developing more intimacy with it and its characters, perhaps the loss would have been that much more difficult to accept...

Reality shows, the Biggest problem with TV today.
Mindnumming TV that everyone can watch, with wath intelegens they might have...
(but more likley people on the lower side of the scale)
Now I might get some angry people after me but...
I´m from Sweden so bare with me...

They aired the first ep of Journeyman here in sweden
yesterday (read monday) on July 1, they must have gotten it cheap , since it was about 6 month ago it ended in the states...

and it is like this with most "new" TV shows on the different swedish TV channels this spring and summer

a few examples... Journeyman, Cashmere Mafia, The Black Donnellys, Flash Gordon
( and that will start on July 4 here in sweden)
Big Shots and Unhitched, I bet there are a few more... but I have started to not give a *beep*

Now... If you are like me and you "get around" the sceduals in the states... tell me please why would I
even bother to make my scedual open for a show that was canceld month ago... only reason that Journeyman caught
my eye whas that the show was what was on when I came home last night from work... I look´t it up on the net and found that...
oki no more season of this one... hopfully nowone will track me down but... I just lookt at ep 13 and I can´t realy
wrap my head around why they canceled it. To the TV executives: the reason why you dont get enough veiwers = the CRAP
that you se thro the fingers for since you expect that the base of the American And Christian people... stop one minute...
sorry... the latest pols said that onley 70% of the US population acctually pray... so that cant be the reason.

But My last joy when it comes to canceled TV shows it was Singing Bee... Now I have only seen TV spots of the swedish version
but... some of those people should be arrested for indecent behaviour.

My message to the US TV executives... The world is bigger then your office... I will know when a show is canceled
before it even is shown here... at the moment I might be a minority where I live... The world is turning... it gets smaller every day.
If you deside to air a show on network TV make shore it is a show that the public will enjoy... for more then 1 season, ohh and every family
in the world is not Christian (thats to FOX) and have 2.3 children.

The shows I miss the most are , Firefly, Invasion and Surface.
I like series with conspiracy theories (like x-files) and sci-fi like Galactica.
I believe the problem with Surface was that the authors couldn't decide if they wanted to make it a serious theme or a funny for family to watch episodes.

As a side note can anyone suggest some good series with conspiracy theories in it? or like those three I mentioned above. thanks!

reply

Well the only reality tv show that I watch is Hell's Kitchen....there is some taste to that, you have to agree.

But as far as all the shows, I've only gotten into stuff like Journeyman, House, Bones, CSI of course....reality is flushing away good programming....but I knew this ten years ago or so when Survivor came crashing through.

I think Journeyman will be back. I don't think it will come back with the same characters, but they'll bring some kind of formula of Journeyman into another show and that one too will probably get cancelled.......it sucks, but that's life!

Drive-Great premise, awesome cast and cancelled after airing four episodes. Why spend all that money just to give up on a show that quick? It makes it even more irritating when lame ass shows seem to go on and on with out end.

Who says violence is not the answer?

There have been many great show canceled by each major network. Here are some of my favorites.
Fox
Point Pleasant-great supernatural show that had good acting and storylines
Reunion-interesting premise but it was basically set up to fail because Fox constantly promoted Prison Break in 2005. The first episodes of Reunion weren't really great. But had potenntial.
Drive-great premise
New Amsterdam-Sure there have been similar shows about immortality but New Amsterdam had twists to the plot. The main character lived multiple lives and fathered children and he had to find his true love in order to age.
Boston Public-there were a few seasons but the show differed from a lot of shows on tv by focusing on public school teachers rather than the countless shows about cops, lawyers and doctors
NBC
Journeyman
The Black Donnelly's -had potential and different type of crime drama show
The Others- I watched this during the NBC run and enjoyed it and it recently on Chiller.
ABC
Daybreak-If this show hadn't been canceled Moon wouldn't have been on Journeyman. I recently watched the show on TVOne and I agree it was good
Miracles-Interesting show on religion and supernatual only lasted 6 episodes but have was praised by critics.
Miss Guided-recently canceled. It had great comedic performances by Judy Greer and Chris Parnell. Had a take on high school through a guidance counselor who had a bad high school experience.
CBS
Jericho-another canceled Skeet Ulrich show but it was brilliant
American Gothic- I didn't watch this show during it's original run but I thought it was good after watching it on Chiller
Defunt WB network
Birds of Prey-good show in the Batman franchise
Jack and Bobby-teen show focused on fictional U.S. president during his teen years
Cable networks
The 4400-should have continued

Don't forget "Profit" with Adrian Pasdar. It aired on FOX in the late 90s and was way ahead of its time. So good it could have been an HBO show like Six Feet Under or the Sopranos.

reply

I was about to list Profit as well. You did it for me.

-Firefly
-The Dresden Files (I got into the books because of the show!)
-Dead Like Me (ended after two very short seasons.)
-Stark Raving Mad (Tony Shaloub and Neil Patrick Harris were hilarious together)
-Keene Eddie
-Invader Zim
-Arrested Development

Though some of these I mention had more than one season.

Some of my faves include:

Daybreak
Invasion
Surface
Firefly
Smith
Cane
Journeyman
Nightstalker
New Amsterdam
Jericho
...and one of my real faves, Threshold

Now that I see it in writing, that's a lot of good shows/talent that the networks wasted.

reply

OF COURSE!! How could we not mention Arrested Development. Probably one of the most unjust cancellations of all time.

That and everything else I would have said have already been mentioned. (wanna throw in another mention of Firefly!).

reply

Boomtown was a fantastic show! Couldn't believe it when it got cancelled!

reply

well, most ones I wanted to say have already been said.

I'd like to add Deadwood which never got the fame it deserved. It ended after 3 seasons but should've gotten a few more. I also found Traveler to be quite interesting, Blade wasn't too bad either. Oh, and Over There should've lasted longer as well!

I just watched the final episode of Journeyman, which was a little sad. It started good, got along Ok but then the last five episodes or so were just fantastic. Some of the ideas (like Dan accidentally changing his son into a daughter) were just jaw-dropping! I like that the show isn't focused on action but rather more personal stuff.

Another awesome show that unfortunately got cancelled was Tru Calling, so many great episodes :) The last ones were a bit much thou, considering her father.

Finally, somebody else besides me who has heard of this show. This has become my favorite show ever. I was hooked from the first episode, and it was another one that got cancelled after only 4 aired. I bought the DVD set when it came out and have watched all 13 episodes that were produced several times since. There has only been one other person I've talked to that had actually heard of it. I'm always afraid to get caught up in new shows because it seems that the ones I truly enjoy are the ones that get axed before the end of the first season.

My list of shows that are gone before their time include:
Wonderfalls
Pepper Dennis
Tru Calling
New Amsterdam
Moonlight
Invasion
Keen Eddie
Canterbury's Law
Women's Murder Club
Big Shots
Veronica Mars (didn't start watching until the 3rd/final season)
Bionic Woman

Last year had some good new shows, but the writer's strike did a good job at killing most of them.

Anyone remember Playmakers?

reply

I remember Playmakers. That show was intense and edgy but it got killed by complaints from the NFL and other organizations.

I've watched the series 3 times already and have turned some friends on to it-we all love it.I'm a big fan of time travel shows and this was maybe the greatest.I'm sick of the idiots that run tv stations. My Own Worst Enemy was great and it died in the same time slot as Journeyman. That scene when Dan says "Every time.." was superb as was the last episode.Crap like Survivor is on for years where these great shows barely get a full season run.Daybreak was great too-I guess Moon should stay away from time travel for awhile.LOL.Surface,Cane(tho losing Smits to Dexter worked out pretty well),Jericho...all terrific all doomed by ratings and/or corporate idiocy.Never saw The Others but I just got Chiller so perhaps they'll run the eps again.

EZ Streets won the Television Critics award for Best Program of the Year and was canceled 9 Episodes in! It's a shame and disappointing to start to invest time and energy and emotion into a show only to have it taken and there's not much you can do. My bro always gives me the "you just lost another one" when he hears about a cancellation.
A few favs (RIP) - Wonderfalls, American Gothic, Invasion. Firefly, Harsh Real, where were the X-File supporters that let The Lone Gunman die, Cupid (with Jeremy Piven...now making a comeback with Canavale), Dead Like me, Brimstone, Touching Evil (Jefferey Donovan and Vera Farmiga!,Pushing Daisys, Freaks and Geeks, John Doe, The Others, Eyes (AJ Langer, Daly), Thief with Andre Braugher.

reply

I so loved this show. I'm kind of still in denial hoping maybe it'll come back. Pointless to hope . . .

Others that i'm missing and were never given the chance to steep and blossom are already mentioned, but I'll chime in again:

* Firefly
* Nowhere Man
* Bionic Woman
* Rome
* 7 Days
* Lipstick Jungle (well, I guess it's not completely dead yet)
* And especially --> Moonlight (I can't believe no one's mentioned this yet)

reply

i can't believe no one's mentioned Carnivàle or My So-Called Life yet...

and of course, Firefly, Tru Calling, Deadwood or Popular

reply

actually, Moonlight was mentioned before...but I didn't notice anyone mentioning
New Amsterdam
