Fentress' consciousness eradicated?

I felt sorry for the teacher as his consciousness is effectively replaced by Gyllenhaal, who them lives his life!

Yeah, you've got a point, except that, without Colter's intervention, Fentress would have been dead anyway in the initial explosion. I've often wondered how Colter would have slotted into Fentress's life without anyone noticing any differences in his behaviour. He wouldn't even know the names of his work colleagues, for example - or of any of the kids he would be expected to teach (along with not having any training as a teacher, either...) Not to mention the fact that he might already be in a long-term relationship, etc etc...

I agree and approve of this. It's just creepy how the other guy is not saved. Then again, there's a verse where the gal is the only survivor staring at rail-rash.

reply

Yeah, and now he gets to do it all over again. He's going to keep replacing people until his body gives out or the entire world is full of Jake Gyllenhaal.

reply

Wow! Shades of "Being John Malkovich" when Malky takes his own ride.

"Malkovich Malkovich Malkovich."

"Malkovich Malkovich..."

Etc.

I agree that this was the weirdest thing about the end of the movie. Isn't it addressed somewhere in media by the writer, director, actors, anything?

I guess one possibility is that Colter Stevens and Sean Fentress are somehow both alive inside Sean's head.

But from those last it does seem more or less like it is just Stevens there. And he doesn't seem worried about what happened to Sean.

And sure, that's a good point; I guess he could replace other people in the future also, without knowing that he had already done it before. But they would probably have to be people who had died anyway?

reply

This was a horrendous ending to the movie... Colter Stevens is occupying Sean's body and going out with his girlfriend... this is just creepy... she has no idea who he really is.... is he going to try to tell her?

The writer or director was just too scared to address these points. Really kind of pathetic.

reply

Actually, she wasn't his girlfriend (they were simply colleagues) but I know what you mean. It just seems as though they wanted a feel good ending, but it was almost on the lines of 'and they all lived happily ever after' (except Fentress, of course).

reply

don't worry

Jake and everyone in that universe will only exist until they switch the Source Code machine off

reply

That was my thought. It's not a real parallel universe, it's a simulation inside the computer. At some point, the Jeffrey Wright double-protected-class character will want an upgrade, and to get ready for his next career-enhancing project.

reply

Right, just watched it and was wondering what happened to the poor guy he inhabited. I guess we're not supposed to care he was effectively assassinated.

reply

Yes me too. So in all this, he is really the on,y person who dies. And he doesn't even really die, just his soul? Kinda confusing. And I like the point someone else made. Fentress wont know anyone's name or recognize his own family. What if he had a girlfriend? I guess it beats being a torso trapped on life support and the teacher should have died anyway, but still something didn't seem right about it. Like we are supposed to just forget this poor teacher. And will Fentress tell his dad or anyone like Goodwin the truth, besides the email. What if his torso wakes up and has consciousness? At first it seemed a storybook ending but gets confusing when you think about it. I guess they are assuming we don't have an attention span long enough to think about these things.
Now where was I? What was I talking about? I forgot already lol. Jk
