It seemed to gain traction *after* the cinema?

I remember going to see this at the cinema upon it's original release (and enjoyed it) but it didn't seem to set the box-office alight upon it's initial release.

It seemed to get more attention/ word-of-mouth/plaudits when it went to DVD (and screened on TV) which might explain the five year gap, before the sequel came along?
