I'm American and I loved this show when I saw it on HBO. I was sad when it was over!

I'm from the UK, just watched it today and loved it. Definitely had a few Ja'mie's and Jonah's when I was at school, haha.
There were a few Aussie terms I didn't understand though.

I'm South African and recently discovered it and immediately fell in love. I've recommended it to almost all my friends.

I definitely knew a few Ja'mies and had a Jonah in my class at high school. The slang used is pretty similar to the way teenagers speak where I grew up to. Although, not every South African teenager will be able to relate to it, just due to the vast discrepancies in cultures here.

Loved it in the UK here - digging 'Angry Boys' too. :)

I have opinions of my own, but I don't always agree with them - George Bush

I love Ja'mie. And that's saying something coz she is EVERYTHING I hate in real life, vain, shallow, nonsensical whiny beetch!!!

I'm really really astounded that she is not a REAL woman. Chris Lilley is perfection portraying her! He literally bring Ja'mie to life!!

Ja'mie's quotes, bitching is sooo random and nonchalant and perfection that it really amuses me no end!

I'm an american and I just recently finished watching this series on HBO. Overall I thought it was just ok. I chuckled a few times per episodes, but there weren't very many laugh-out-loud hilarious parts.

Question for aussies: do students get away with swearing at their teachers like that?

reply

I am very well traveled. I dont know if that made it easier for me to immediately pick up on humor cues from a different society. Some.

I would actually pause the video and look up a slang word that I did not know or some cultural reference.

I recon there was almost nothing uniquely cultural to Australia that got by me. It did take some occasion research on my part. That did not make anything LESS funny. In fact it enriched my life I would have to say.

If I was Australian, I would be incredibly proud of Chris Liley.

I had no problem understanding the character Johna.
I was shocked to see Ja'mie, however. A character I thought uniquely American. So these loathsome sub species of teen age girl populate the entire world do they? I want to puke now. What can we do to eradicate this scourge?

A mate got me into the show recently an I think its brilliant. We both agree that we know or more knew people like each of the 3 main characters back when we were in school.

Im from the US and I love his stuff, the guy is brilliant in every show, Hilarious
and flawless imitation at the same time. btw Renew Spirited also AU!

reply

New Zealander here and I've seen them all.

Especially the Jai-me's and the the Jonahs. There are a lot of Jonahs in schools over here.

reply

I agree Jai-me and Jonah are the funniest characters. Mr G is just evil. As I understand it, the series is meant to show off Chris Lilley's comedic range, while spoofing public schools. I think it works pretty well on both counts. I remember kids from High School like Jonah, they provided comedic relief to an otherwise dreary circumstance.

I live in England and find it quite funny. Not hilarious, but fun and amusing enough.
There we're definitely Ja'mie's at my school.

I guess it's probably funnIER for Australians because it's more socially relevant.

The only thing was I had to look up "bogan" haha.

I'm from England and loved it. I got most of the references due to the popularity of neighbours and home and away here.

I'm from the US but have never been outside of the states, but I honestly, I find this show absolutely hilarious. Ja'mie King is one of my favorite TV characters of all time...

I'm American and I think SHH is absolutely hilarious. I don't know people like the characters but I don't think that matters. I love them all!
