What is wrong with you people?

I just watched this film, based on the recommendations of countless horror fans on this board... and I gotta ask, what is wrong with you people? I felt like I was watching a student film. There is nothing remotely scary about this movie, unless u count the crappy CGI and the EXTREMELY BAD acting. The idea is interesting... but the main problem is the fact that it was completely unbelievable, mainly due to the poor execution. It's just so terribly done it reminded me of student films I've seen on youtube.

Super Psychic? More like Super bad actor. Every scene this guy was in was utterly laughable! That's it. It's not even debatable. If you actually think the scenes involving this character were frightening, then you ARE in a state of denial. He may very well be the worst actor I've ever seen. His ridiculous aluminum foil get-up added to the hilarity of it all. It was just plain bad!

Basically every scene in which a character had a seizure was hilarious, because the acting was so inadequate. When the characters suddenly started moaning and became immobile... LOL! This movie was terrible, and I say this as a HUGE FAN of J-Horror. I personally believe the Japanese are extremely skilled when it comes to frightening people, but this movie was pathetic. It's no wonder this movie isn't even listed on rottentomatoes, or any other horror sites I've been on.

Yeah I agree, as soon as Horoi turns up in his tin hat, my immediate thought was "car-ray-zee!" and found it funnier rather than scarier. It did get better towards the end, but not much.

could the reason so many people hate Mr. Nori simply be cultural?
I'm wouldn't know myself, as i'm no expert on the subject, but while I agree that his performance was over the top and distracting, I've noticed that it's something that happens in lots of japanese movies, whether they're recent or very old. Could the Japanese simply have different manneurisms that seem strange to the rest of the world, or could they value strong performances over realistic portrayals - something else I noticed from watching traditional japanese performance arts.
maybe this kind of acting is considered more acceptable in japan.
just a theory.

I thought that the psychic had some sort of mental problem, some of those illnesses that cause twitches and speech problems. It seems to me that he's in constant pain or something (especially because he's aware of everything that is happening because of the curse, apparently), and that he can't talk or communicate normally.
If he's just crazy, then I agree with cracked_machine.

It is a good film even very good. But it is not the best horror of all time and not even the best Japanese horror.
I don't know why so many have this as their favourite Asian horror film. I have seen hundreds of Asian horror films and I can easily mention several horror films that are better than Noroi.

I don't always reply on IMDB, but when I do, I've just watched a amazing movie and have half a pint of Johnnie Walker Black in me. Really though, I've never been invested in a film this much since There Will Be Blood.

Lord, don't forgive them, for they know what they do. French.

"and I say this as a HUGE FAN of J-Horror."

No you're not, and you never will be.

This movie is amazing. I watched at 2 am in the garage in the dark and it really creeped me out and stuck with me for a few days. I think the psychic may have been a little comedic on purpose, but that's not that uncommon in Asian horror.

Also, no,you couldn't do any CGI remotely comparable to this movie. You can, however manage to come off like an insufferable douchebag armchair critic.

reply

Well it's just another "found footage" movie.
I love Japanese horror, I never understood the point of "found footage".
When you want to make everything look real as on amateur tape, you make everything look amateur and fake. And boring, although this film has its moments.

reply

Meh didn't care for the film. The ending was the worse, all that is happening and he decides to record it? Just seemed unrealistic. It had some moments but overall a pretty generic and somewhat boring film.

Look another of those "I don't like this movie, so it's automatically bad. It's not even up for debate" type of person. *closes tab*

I agree. I couldn't believe how unspeakably awful this movie was. The high rating on several sites and good reviews flummox me.

The very first few seconds, where the movie tries to sell you the "the events in this found footage film actually happened" shtick were already bad enough. This crap overstayed its welcome by the time Blair Witch II came out, for fĂșck's sake.

The documentary-like feel is a complete failure. Why try as hard as possible to make cheesy things as ghost stories realistic? Real life is way scarier than "ghosts", "curses" and other superstitious nonsense. If you want to see realistic horror, just watch the news. The documentary aspect just makes everything look more fake and stilted. Also, it's almost insulting. As in, someone actually thinks so little of you that he figures this type of fluff will scare you.

Then, the film is way too long and boring. It is absolutely, ungodly, excruciatingly boring and the entire time I was just begging for it to end already. The psychic loon is incredibly irritating and the scenes with him are cringe-worthy. The scenes with the actress falling into trance or something like that are just unconvincing. The scenes intended to be "scary" are just nauseating, what with the shaky cam and tons of screaming. The visuals and sound are also pretty bad (quite obviously since this is a found footage film). If this piece of sh*t was an American horror film, everyone would rightfully discard it as immature, badly paced, crappily acted and tedious. But since it's a J-Horror film, this ridiculous film is worshipped because it's exotic to some people, I guess.
