worst mafia movie ever

I usually enjoy Italian movies, but this one sucks real bad.

This is a very bad movie.

first time I slept after 40 minutes

second time, to finish it, I just got annoyed, boring, slow, no script, nothing
it is a piece of sh#t

I realize there is a much longer thread with a similar theme, but I'll back you up. I struggled so very hard to get through this. Took me two days. If it wasn't for Scorsese slapping his name on the cover I might've just given up all together, but I got through it and I know all I'll do is forget it by tomorrow night.

It was too much and not enough both at the same time. Too many characters, too much stuff going on, not enough focus, not enough individual character focus, just not enough period.

as others have said in different threads, this movie wasn't meant to be about the mafia per se. It was to be a window to the world in which we are used to seeing glamorized.

the movie still sucks.

Well, first thing you all missed: Mafia and Camorra are different organizations.

reply

thank u!! i watched about an hour and 45 minutes (surprised I made it that far), and then went to sleep...absolutely nothing happened in this movie!!!

reply

Nothing happened? Well, even many big budget American productions are in my opinion more like "still life" than this one was. For example, Falling Down captures some minor crime incident in Los Angeles while this movie, through five stories, captures the whole essence and reality of Italian organized crime in every level.

While it is true that nothing very dramatic happens, this movie tells you a whole lot more about contemporary culture of Italy and various issues there than an average American movie tells you about its surroundings.

This is not a "Mafia" movie, per se. And it is FAR from the worst. Other than the fact that they are both secret Italian criminal societies, the Sicilian Mafia and Neopolitan Camorra are two very different entities. I personally loved Gomorra and think it gets even better with repeat viewings. It's also a very realistic, nuanced depiction of the crime and hopelessness that swamps Naples (just about every actor in the Marco/Ciro storyline - with the exception of the two leads - was a real-life associate of the Casalesi clan).

I can understand why some may not like it (non-linear storylines, subtitles), but I personally get the impression that many people went in expecting the European equivalent of Goodfellas and becoming hugely disappointed when they didn't get it. In today's short-attention span society, some unfortunately seem to think that less action equals bad movie.

"Worst Mafia movie ever"? Hardly.

In fact, I'd respectfully submit that Gomorra is one of the BEST movies ever made about Italian organized crime.

I watched it for the first time last night and was astonished by it.....

I found the total 'matter of factness' of the violence absolutely convincing and quite scary.
It looked completely 'real' the locations were superb (it struck me that they were pretty brave to film inside the housing complex...not sure I would have wanted to do that)and I had to keep reminding myself that some of this people were actually acting and it wasn't a documentary.

I agree with racehorse that the non linear story lines may initially put people off but it becomes pretty clear within a short space of time what is going on.
Initially I thought it was a series of vignettes of types of criminality in Naples from low level to sophisticated and it was done so well I was quite happy if that is what it had turned out to be but I was wrong it was far more and better.

And on reflection I think that being sub-titled helped the film....because it distanced me a little and I had to read the faces and body language of the actors, locations etc as well as the stripped down words, which in turn made me work harder to concentrate on the film so as not to miss anything.

In short...I loved it and would certainly watch it again.

It certainly is enough to keep anyone away from Naples!

Please. If you didn't like this movie, just go re-watch Avatar
and Episode I: The Phantom Menace.

reply

Yeah, at least they've got a story going for them.

reply

I agree. Although I didn't get past the first 45 minutes myself either. I just found the cinematography way too annoying. it was actually uncomfortable to watch.

Most of the film (as far as I got) is shot with an unsteady swaying camera looking at the back of someone's head (usually very close) and following them around in environments which were poorly lit and backlit. A lot of the interior scenes have the characters are in shadow with bright light pouring through windows behind them.

I realise these are elements of a documentary filming style which give an effect of realism and being there and I have seen and enjoyed other films which use this approach, but I'm sorry, it doesn't work here at all. It was just irritating to watch.

Added to this, an unclear and poor 5.1 soundtrack just made the experience worse for me.

I might be being unfair having not endured it through but to class this as a top notch gangster film means you have to draw comparisons with Goodfellas, The Godfather, Scarface, Casino etc and it is not in the same league.

My views have nothing to do with the fact that it's a foreign language/subtitled film. I have no problem with subtitles/world cinema.

worst mafia movie ever? you don't know what you are talking about

as for all others: go watch the sicilian girl ... similar movie and also great

reply

I did not find it boring at all. Maybe you should stick to the Twilight movies....

I found it to be fascinating and wholly engaging. this movie allowed the viewer to peer into a world we normally would never even know about.

Talk about the opposite of The Godfather; Gomorra was unflinching in its realistic depiction of what an awful and sad life the Mafia is.

I only fell asleep watching the bonus features; and I'm ready to watch the entire film again sometime in the future.

This is the most realistic mafia film ever made. If realism means "worst" to some people, I guess they were looking for something a little more glamorizing, in the American fashion. In my personal opinion, Gomorrah is one of the finest crime films ever made. The realism is astounding. It really does recall the neorealist works of De Sica or Rossellini. I simply cannot believe the film only has a rating of 7.0 on imdb. What a shame.

reply

I think americans have a too "mythicized" idea of mafia, just look at "The Godfather"...
The myths some of the characters of "Gomorra" are charmed by, like the two boys who play "Scarface"
"Gomorra" shows reality as it is: harsh and cruel
