Why wouldn't Shmuel escape?
It would've been very easy. He could've done it the same way he let Bruno in.
shareExecution if caught? How would Bruno hide him, there were Nazis crawling all over his house!
If guards didn't even notice him near the fence talking to Bruno, they probably wouldn't have notice him sneak out the camp either.
