the ending sucked

It's obvious they loved each other, yet they both go back to people who have hurt them in the past. This has to be the stupidest ending ever.

People have pretty much answered your question, but I just wanted to add that I thought it was a mature and realistic ending as well. If they had gotten together at the end it would have been so cliched, and it would have ruined the tone of the movie. Besides, I felt like their connection transcended mere romance; it was something more meaningful. If they had gotten together real life probably would have ruined their relationship, because that's the way life is. I think they wanted to leave it at that so it would be perfect forever. Their one encounter was enough because it changed their lives: they got more out of spending a few days with each other than most people get in their lifetime.

Look at the responses on this thread! The ending makes you wonder. I think that alone gives it worth. :)

Personally, I don't think they should have been together. They could have been wonderful friends, and they were for a short time. They probably would've had a great whirlwind romance, but I have a feeling (and little other evidence) that it wouldn't have lasted very long. Whether or not it would have worked, though, they both came out of it stronger people, having healed from past hurts, and ready to go back and face their pasts. I don't know how it will turn out for them, and though I'd love to find out, I think that uncertainty makes this a wonderful film and a great ending. They both developed through (as someone here called it) this short vignette in their respective lives. What happens next will be forever changed by this week together as good friends.

Perhaps it was foolish to go back to what has hurt them in the past (though really, unless I missed something, we know very little about what actually happened, especially with the Girl). Perhaps it's a sign of greater integrity and strength than either of them had before. Perhaps it shows that they are becoming more benevolent and less selfish and are finally able to forgive. I'm not really sure. Whatever the case, they've changed and, I think, become better people from their friendship.

The Girl was married with a child and her husband wanted to make a life with her. She chose to give her marriage a chance. The Guy was still in love with his ex.

They both acted like grown-ups, not like a couple of scumbags. It was the best possible ending.

I second everything that was already said. This was the best possible ending.

Their relationship as it was, was a fleeting moment in time. Had they gotten together chances are it really wouldn't have worked. They were both still involved with other people and they bonded primarily because of that, because of their loneliness and their music.

Not to deny the beauty of the situation, but that doesn't mean it's the basis for a life long relationship.
It's refreshing.

hate to be in a relationship with you. no forgiveness or perseverance.

besides, in what way was it "obvious they loved each other"?

they liked each other, music is a language which crosses boundaries, musicians connect over it, which the film beautifully portrays...

I didn't like the ending either... It is realistic...but so is my life where the girl I fell for ended up going back to her lousy boyfriend and I ended up going back to my old girlfriend... that ending sucks as well...I go to films for hope and to escape reality. I get enough reality from reality haha.
