Sequel - Once Again?

It's probably hard to catch lightning in a bottle for a 2nd time - but a sequel (my title "Once Again")would be a great way to continue the story. Two keys things would be another batch of good songs and keeping it simple and low budget like the first. It could pick up shortly after the movie finished or put a few years between.

I enjoyed Before Sunset almost as much as Before Sunrise. Maybe Once could reward us with a fitting sequel. Others hopeful? Any rumors of this?

No...this movie is so wonderful to get a sequel.
I think the most amazing thing in the movie, is that is so simple.
2 characters, no names, a casual encounter.
Making a big story for the characters wouldn't be a good thing to me.

The movie is that...a moment in thair lives.Just Once.

I think the sequel should be called "Twice".

As speaking to Glen and Mar myself in Dublin recently have said there no chance for a sequel. They both want to focus their work in their music and have no interest to make a sequel. But, if different film opportunity were to come up, they would consider it, although it would be unlikely. A lot of people here need to understand that neither Glen nor Mar are professional actors with years of experience at some royal acting school. They are two wonderful musicians whose songs found their way from the tiny island of Ireland to all across the globe. They were not expecting the success that this film brought. They just did something they loved.

A sequel is unnecessary to this film as both guy and girl found happiness in their past lives. It's nothing like Before Sunrise/Sunset. There would not be a need to put the guy and girl characters together. It wouldn't be fitting. They were meant to help each other through their past through the music they create together. This isn't a typical Hollywood flick. It had a calm indie flick ending. I love those dammit...

It's too bad that more films like this (or like Before Sunrise/Sunset) aren't made--I really can't stand the output from the studios today. In fact TV and the movies are horrible. Everything has an "edge" or gimmick just to keep your attention.

I agree, we don't need a sequel to "Once". What we need is a movie that is as real, creative and engaging as Once.

Nice idea for the title - "Once again". But no. I don't think its good idea to make the sequel - This movie is as poetic as it is to be singular masterpiece - we all live our life ONCE - no matter how much we want to recapture moment of those singular moment of happyness, it won't come back. That's just life and I am glad the director didn't want to make a sequel for it.

- Live your life - no regret.

Stop already with the F*&KIN sequels!! I have a great idea. Let's enjoy, embrace and relish the film. What the hell is this obsession with sequels?! 99.9999999999999% of the time, they SUCK.

Watch the original again if you like it. Then MOVE on to the next film.

"Once" is quite enough. We don't need to ruin an exquisite little love story by trying to extend it beyond its natural conclusion. The movie is perfectly self-contained. Let it just be.

I don't see the need for a sequel either. It was perfectly simple the way it was and you can imagine how it continues in your own mind.

That said, I also like Before Sunrise and Before Sunset very much. Although different in many ways from Once, they have in common a similar theme. In the case of Before Sunrise it was fitting to have the sequel.

Once's excellent ending makes a case for no sequel and a case for a sequel at the same time. Can the viewer find peace with an ending where the girl accepts a fate of working class immigrant laborer, finding beauty where she can in her limited domestic life, knowing she has a high level of musical talent that will likely not be realized? This is the stark reality suggested by the ending we see, her melancholy stare out of the window that closes the picture and makes the viewer's heart ache. Excellent as is. But a case also exists for a story where she becomes restless with her lot, where the guy needs her as part of the creative process as he tries to succeed in London, and the two connect once again where her talent is employed and their music together becomes something better than either could create individually. I think the focus of a sequel would need to be more on her and how she balances her domestic responsiblities with her talent and how they channel their love for one another and how it impacts their love of others -- a movie that could expand upon on some important issues already presented and raise some new ones. Yes, this would be too "Hollywood" for many, but nonetheless could work if its music is as good or better than in the first movie and is not given a fairy tail ending. The music is what is key. Also, a case could be made for including a prequel, with a focus on her, her talent, and what brought her to Dublin, and also on what happened or didn't happen between the guy and his lover.

No offense to the original poster or others with good ideas about how a sequel would play out, but to me, making a sequel to this would destroy the entire credibility and uniqueness of Once. One of the major points of the film is that it is supposed to relate to everyone through some singular experience that we shared with another person. It's sort of like taking a very specific time in your life that was special in one way or another, and looking at it in a vacuum. Learning anything more about these people's lives would stifle the beauty of the generality and ability of the first film to relate to everyone. Hence making the names of the characters "Guy" and "Girl."

I know it's easy as fans of the movie to want more-- to want more music, to see how their lives played out, see if there was any way that their relationship could be rekindled--but in a sense, these characters aren't "characters" in the usual interpretation of the term. Their life only exists within the confines of the movie, because they represent us, a slice of our own lives, and we have to extend the plot with our own stories.

Good points. Probably is better to leave alone.

If Before Sunset can work, then so can a sequel to Once.

I hope you're right. I watched Before Sunset two days ago and was delighted with it and found it even more compelling than the first movie. I think it worked because Hawke and Delpy were actively involved with the sequel's script. Don't know if similar conditions could exist with a sequel for Once, but we won't know unless it is tried.

As much as I would like to see Glen and Marketa in a movie together again and how much I also love this film I think it is best not to make a sequel for this wonderful movie. I agree with what other people say about Before Sunrise/Sunset to be different with this film, it has an ambiguous ending but still beautiful. Unlike with Once where they each went their own happy lives with Marketa going back happily with her husband and Glen trying to win her girlfriend back.

Let's just wait for another movie which is as wonderful as this. I'm sure it will be worth it when they arrive.
