Why tell 3 Very well dress black women: We don't keep cash in the store.

That was the stupidest scene of any of Tyler Perry's movies. As if a woman is so racist in 2007 that she would assume 3 very well dressed black women just because they were loud, they might rob the store, so she comes over to tell them they don't keep any cash in the store. Not to mention it was an expensive woman's clothing store and they were wearing expensive fur coats etc. Just was so uncalled for.. There was no humor to it at all.

I chuckled. Apparently this is hard to believe, but even well dressed black people are still occasionly followed around in the store because someone thinks they look suspicious.

But honestly, I don't see why people are looking into this so seriously. Perry may have taken the easy route, but it was obviously meant as a joke and not as some hidden message to suggest white people are racist. The overly snootie way the woman said it and how she snootily walked away made her seem more like a caricature of the bigoted white person. It was just an overly silly version of something that again, is still something black people experiance.

I could understand if they were younger women, dressed ghetto fabulous, and looked all suspect, then the racism alarm might set in some white people. But these were 35-40 year old women dressed in upscale clothes shopping in an upscale clothing store. It just wasn't even funny.

reply

That's the thing about about racism. A racist or bigoted person doesn't see the upscale clothes, they just see the skin color. And if they do see the upscale clothes they probably think they stole them. Again, this was exaggerated version of that, but these situations STILL do happen.

If you didn't think it was funny, then it wasn't funny for you. I understand that. I didn't thinwk it was fall on the floor hilarious. I just chuckled.

I didn't say if they just looked Ghetto Fab, I said if they was all loud too. If that was your store, and some loud ass bitches went up in there and was making a ruckus, you'd throw there asses out. Same if it were some white trailer women which was obvious didn't shower for a week and started trying on clothes, they would be tossed out too. You wouldn't just say.. we don't keep cash in the store.. You'd get a bat and chase them out.

Followed around, as if one might shoplift is one thing (it has happened to me and I am white), implying that someone is going to rob the register is another. I can't imaging any shop employee saying that in that situation.

Another thing that surprised me is that after that Sheila still bought something from there (granted she was not in earshot, but her friends would likely say something).

This made me want to turn it off! This scene was ridiculous and typical of his movies. Oh the white person is so mean, just like they had a white person on the plane. Why is ok for blacks to poke fun at whites and its entertainment but a white person does this to a black person and its racism????

What do you mean here? The flight attendant, while he could’ve been a little more sympathetic, was following the guidelines of the industry. It had nothing to do with trying to point out that “White people are mean.” His comments to her had nothing to do with her race, it was about how big she was.

The person that looked the worse in this situation was her husband who cruelly heckled and scolded her about her weight and made her drive all by herself.

Edit: Or are you talking about the white guy sitting next to her, who told on her? Again, that had nothing to do with the color of her skin. That was more about his annoyance that he would have to spend the entire flight uncomfortably sitting next to a very large woman.

You say this as if because it's the 21st century racism isn't an issue . That situation is far from unheard of. Unfortunately, things like that happen everyday. Just because you don't hear about them, doesn't make it any less plausible.

It isn't THAT far fetched, something similar like that happened to my friends and ALL they own is designer clothes. I felt it was humorous

I agree 100% that whole joke of White store people following well dreesed Blacks around stores went out in the 90s honestly. It's never happened to me before so maybe I can't relate.

I recently saw Boomerang again with Eddie Murphy and Hale Berry.

The scene where Eddie, Martin, and David Allen Greer go into an expensive suit store and the white salesman said that's really expensive.. we don't keep cash in the store.. See.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EnuvUACQOvE

Guess Tyler Perry ripped someone off with that scene.

This is for Allah... and it's going way out there sucka...

Nothing like that ever happened to meee... BUT something similar does happen to me quite often. I'm fairly light skinned mixed Black/White with Eurasian features, dress nicely and fashionable. I walked into a Neiman Marcus to buy something and the sales ladies were 2 white and one Korean - they all greeted me with a smile, but that was it. The two white ladies in their mid to late 30s rushed to help out a couple of older White women that walked in after me. I felt a little weird because I had a question, but those two ladies acted like I didn't want to be bothered. The Asian girl seemed to notice it,stopped whatever she was doing and came out to try and help me. I left with 10 items and spent close to $3,000 and the other customers only bought something on sale for $200. Yeah, I loved watching their faces as I walked away with my merchandise - they looked at the Korean salesperson like WTF just happened. Each time I've gone back there I only walk up to the Korean girl.

PS. I didn't assume it was because they were racist, just stupid and unprofessional. They assumed because of the way I looked I wouldn't give them a good commission.

Joke's on you. You fattened their pockets. A true revenge would've been to complain to management and leave without spending a dime.

reply

We fatten the pockets of ignorant people all the time. I don't need revenge - I don't give a sh!t enough to want revenge. Especially when the person wasn't being racist, but judging my economical status. I'm not going to boycott an entire store or company for the wrongdoings of ONE person.

Please remember the script for the movie was first produced by Mr. Perry as a play on the "Chitlin' Circuit".

It's possible the racist line worked much better in the play so Mr. Perry kept it in the film. But evidently it didn't go over quite so well as seen in people's comments here. :-(

I was watching Tyra Banks a while back and she did a study on her show about judging people. She took two ladies, one black and one white both with children. The white mom was dressed in sweats and her kids had holes in their coats. The black mom was dressed nicely in I think Ralph Lauren and her kids were wearing GAP yet when Tyra got opinons of people who judge them just by looking at them. Most people looked at the Black mom as a welfare case, with more than one baby daddy even though she was dressed nicely. They looked at the white mom as a good stay at home wife and a husband with a nice job.

See how screwed up people are? some people don't take anything else into mind only ethnicity. All they see is color.

with all due respect

Tyra Banks show is garbage.....just entertainment...whatever "studies" or "tests" she has are pseudo science.......done to make people take the "findings" seriously....

the scene was definitely homage to the scene in Boomerang.....

and it showed, to me, 2 things.....how their loud friend was EMBARRASSING the other 2 ladies...............they are adults not children, after all...

and how retail establishments profile Black customers.

Here's a segment from What Would You Do? called 'Shopping While Black'

Based on stuff that does happen, and look at the guy agreeing with the actress - those perceptions still exist.
