He did not seem to be a very good shot with his Browning pistol, did he? It might have been his nerves working on him, to be fair. Stress does affect marksmanship, so this could have been it.

We are accustomed to seeing movies where everybody is brilliant. Actually probably most people are pretty useless.

I'm pretty sure the point of the scene was to show how upset he was. Not real complicated eh?
