SPOILER. The wife/mother's fate

SPOILERS: You'd have to have a heart of stone if you didn't feel something in this scene.

The mother/wife has despaired of living in a post-disaster world that's not worth living in. She has long wanted to kill her own son and then herself, except for the resistance of her husband who wants to go on living. So she commits suicide via hypothermia by walking out into the dark, freezing, stormy night wearing only a sweatshirt and jeans. Her husband is unwilling to imprison his own beloved wife and so is helpless to do anything as he has to watch her walk out into the storming night, never to be seen again.

All he has left is his flesh-and-blood, his own son, and his memories of his wife before the planetary-wide disaster.

It's another heartbreaking scene as the husband slowly pushes his gold wedding ring off the bridge into the chasm below because he knows that he must literally bury his memories of his loved wife before it emotionally crushes him

I thought this scene was the most depressing scene I have ever seen in my life, the acting was so convincing. This movie left me with a depressing feeling for 4 days :)

I felt the same way. Very sad. This man trying to keep his family together in this destitute world and being completely helpless.
I understood the mother's despair and her points about heathens eventually raping and eating her and her son, but I still felt it was her responsibility to press on for the sake of this family she created.

"but I still felt it was her responsibility to press on for the sake of this family she created."

Press on for what reason, exactly? There was nothing to live for. No hope. No future.
She said it herself, she didn't just want to survive. What kind of life is that anyway?

Her husband only had 2 bullets left. Not enough for each of em. She left to freeze to death.

For me, the number of bullets or the fear of getting raped is not enough to abandon your family in such a time of need. They could have simply cut their wrists with a hidden razor blade if needed. Also, it makes no sense: fear of rape, so abandon your kid? Wise up, a mother's instinct would never allow such a thing.

Ya know what? Maybe it's propaganda! Ya know, to send a message to women... Like, it's ok to abandon your kid if you don't feel like you have a life of luxury? These hollyweird types love to try and break up the family with their filth.
