Dominique Pinon

My husband and I saw Roman de gare yesterday and I was rather repulsed througout because it looks like Dominique Pinon has no top teeth. It was disgusting. How any young girl could fall for somebody like that is beyond me. I could barely watch the kissing scenes at the end. Did anybody else notice this?

It was a brilliant idea to cast the, indeed, Popeye-like Pinon as your most unlikely romantic hero. It serves well the ambiguity of the story, especially at the beginning of the movie (who is the serial killer?) and, unlike what you say, it is quite believable that the "young girl could fall" for him. First she's not a young girl (a thirty something who is also a prostitute). Second, the vacuity of her handsome fiance - and the viewer can imagine he is just one of several - is better highlighted. Third, he is not "that" ugly (when his face is at rest).

To be repulsed and disgusted by the look of Pinon will deprived you of many of the most entertaining French movies of the last two or three decades, for example, all Jeunet's (including Amelie!), Polanski's Frantic, Beineix's Diva. In other words, he is an experienced and appreciated actor.

Indeed and one thing i like about French cinema and European cinema in general (David Thewlis anyone?...) is that we don't miss on great actors because their looks isn't in accordance to the advertisment and magazines, fashion industries ' rules on beauty... like Daniel Auteuil, Jean-Pierre Darroussin, Gérard Depardieu etc...

Dominique Pinon is a very good actor.

…Indeed delsa, and I thought it was one of his best roles EVER ! And once, waiting for a play, I got close to the guy, who was starring in the theater next door.
What, people wants movie-land to be only made of young folks with perfect bodies, MTV-like ? Do they want to get rid of those which are not "perfect" ? How many of us would be left if only "The beautiful people" (as in Marylin Manson's song) had a right to live ? Besides, "beauty" is only in the eye of the beholder. How many popular actor/actress would be judged "plain" if they were not stars ? And what about Fanny Ardant, who is no spring chicken ? And Charlotte Rampling, who manages sexy nude scenes when SHE IS ABOUT SIXTY ? If the world has to be filled with Paris bloody Hilton clones, count me on the next spaceship leaving Earth…
Old cinephile will remember Martha Saagerbrecht in "Bagdad Café". As long as the fashion pack does not destroy every trail this movie ever existed…

I read all three replies and I see what you are saying. I'm not talking especially about ugly; I'm talking about teeth. I am repulsed by someone with no top teeth and I stand by that. It might be forgiveable if he were 90 or older but he is young....there is no excuse for that....not in today's times.

I don't think my position is all that unreasonable. Teeth are important in my family....my father had all his teeth when he died at nearly 90 and so did my mother.

Please reply.

As for the movie Diva....I loved it...we saw it in Bexley, OH at the Drexel Theatre.

What a terrible, sad world this would be if the lack of top teeth would preclude a loving, wonderful soul from attaining true love. What about people with scarred, deformed faces? Are they off limits as well? Fat people? Amputees?
If my husband were to lose all his teeth tomorrow, and we were unable to afford to get him new ones...would I never kiss him again? Please. Grow up.
One can only wonder what other limits you place on people as far as their physical acceptability.

I was born with no teeth, no hair, and the IQ of a squash. I will now consider myself lucky that my parents loved me as I was.

I loved seeing Dominique Pinon in a leading role. I would have thought he wouldn't be leading man material, but with his great acting skills he was able to pull it off. I have seen many of his films and had always wondered if he could do it - now I know!

Reaction time is a factor in this, so please pay attention.

Does he have top teeth? And if not, one would think he'd do something about it. I think it's safe to say he could afford to.
