There was a second Wizard of Oz, it was just insane and had a bunch of decapitated people in it.. It was a straight to video, crappy kind of movie >.< This will definitely be better!!

You are talking about Return to Oz, which is actually more fairly to the books then the original Wizard of Oz that starred Judy Garland. The original Wizard of Oz and bright is cheerful. MGM made it that way so it would appeal to family and children. The only dark part of the movie is the tornado scene, the wicked witch and her flying monkeys. The book for the Wizard of Oz book was actually darker then that. The Return to Oz film is more dark and sinister like the book it came from. People hated it because it was a musical and it was bright and cheerful like the original. The original film wasn't suppose to be a musical or as cheering as MGM made it.

Now I have no idea where Dorthy of Oz and Oz: The Great & Powerful fall with the books. I had listed the books on the forums for Oz: The Great and Powerful in the order they were written. Not sure how good this film will be. The CGI looks average to me. Nothing special.

IT's based on a book by a decendent of L. Frank Baum. I read it in the 90s, wasn't that good.

Strange to follow up the new live action film with this cartoon version.

There were actually 5 Oz movies that are based on the Dorothy we know and love from the original Wizard of Oz (movies AND book series!):

1. Wizard of Oz
2. Return to Oz
3. Journey Back to Oz (which is the animated version of Return to Oz)
4. Dorothy of Oz (which is the CGI animated version of Return to Oz)
5. Dorothy and the Witches of Oz

Then there's the animated Wizard of Oz series that only lasted 13 episodes and was made in 1990 for ABC.

If you're looking to watch the movies chronologically, I would suggest you do it like this:

1. Oz the Great and Powerful (2013)
2. The Wizard of Oz (1939)
3. Journey Back to Oz (1974)/Return to Oz (1985)/Dorothy of Oz
4. Dorothy and the Witches of Oz (2012)

Then there's the other movies and mini-series to watch too if you want to get more into the Oz movies:

1. The Wiz (1974)
2. Wicked (2005)
3. Tin Man (2007)

Sorry, I can't help pointing out a few inaccuracies here. For starters, I'm quite certain there are more movies and TV shows than the ones cited here. Return to Oz and Journey Back to Oz are both partially based on the book The Marvelous Land of Oz, the second in the series. The forthcoming Dorothy of Oz is not based on any book by L. Frank Baum, but by his great grandson Roger and it's meant to be set in between the first and second books in the official series, so if you attempt to put these in some sort of order, Dorothy of Oz should come after The Wizard of Oz. Dorothy and the Witches of Oz is an original story and clearly there are a lot of problems trying to reconcile it with any other version of Oz seen previously in books or film.

I remember watching the short-lived ABC animated series as a kid and being instantly disappointed because it wasn't based on the books at all. There's an anime series from the 1986 that is way more faithful to the books, though it gets less and less so as it progresses. Additionally, there's another anime version of The Wizard of Oz from 1982 that is also a way more faithful adaptation of the book than the Judy Garland film.

Don't get excited. This movie looks TERRIBLE!! Go watch Return to Oz which was done with he girl from the Craft and B;lade Three. It is not as good as the Wizard of Oz but it is a much better film than this movie will be by the looks of the trailer.

"Return to Oz" is one of my favorite Oz movies (& movies in general) for a lot a reasons, & I consider it to be easily superior to the Judy Garland movie. I know that RTO is finally getting more recognition, that it deserves, but it's still basically unknown among the majority of movie watchers. It greatly disappointed me that so many people who were interested about "Oz the great & powerful" thought there it & the Judy Garland movie were the only 2 "Oz" movies that there were. The truth is that there are about a zillion "Oz" movies out there, with a lot of them being straight-to-vhs/DVD movies, & a lot of them also being foreign movies that were never released outside of their own countries.

For those who pointed out that in the "canon" books in the OZ series there are inconsistencies, one way to resolve them would be to use the idea of parallel dimensions (which is kinda what the Land of Oz itself is anyway).
