Question Regarding Scene in Last Episode (Possible Spoiler)

When Lewis and Hathaway go to David's house to discuss the case, they see he has a bomb there. They want him to be gentle with it.
Considering it travelled throughout the postal system with no problem seemed a bit strange.
Guess it is plot device?
Seemed a bit weak.
In any case, will miss the show.

What's even more strange is that no one is seriously wounded in the explosion. How could David be certain of that?

Or, he was just going to call the police to tell he received a suspicious package.
Of course, how would he know what kind of package the bomb came in?

Yes, very dramatic situation, but tons of logical problems with it.
