Sigh! Another Rip-Off of Hollywood

Its like Bollywood isnt even trying to hide it these days. Even by watching the trailers i can confirm that this movies is a Rip-Off of Miracle. Even the trailer's dialogs are copied. Pity.

reply

The Sports underdog movie has long been a staple of Hollywood. Whether it's Miracle, Remember the Titans or even The Mighty Ducks, an underdog movie done well can be entertaining.

Let's see how Bollywood pulls it off.

Batman (to the Joker): We're going to kill each other aren't we?

reply

First it was a Bend it ripoff, now it is a Miracle ripoff.. Mighty Ducks, Hoosiers - which was the first one that all these are ripping off of?

Oh for the love of Thor, its a movie about sport!!! The lovable motley crew of underdogs courageously taking on the world, of course it's been seen before! It's the perennial theme of just about every sports related film!

I know, it's a rip off of Sumo Do Sumo Dont, no wait it's a copy of Dodgeball, no Shoalin Soccer, no Lagaan, no A League of Their Own, no Iron Ladies, no Fist of Fury, no Les Boys no wait . . . the list is sodding endless!

ITS A MOVIE ABOUT SPORT!!

Super-Shashi-Love !!

I am not talking about the "Theme" of the movie... no. we have seen an underdog winning something big before. I am saying that the dialogs of the movie, the style of trailers, the way SRK is trying to play the character.

for example... the dialog, I dont care which state are you from. I only know 1 name India. is a straight Rip off. there are many things more, even SRK's outfit is a copy of Kurt Russell's.

reply

Err - Kurt Russel talked about states? No one in the US cares about states! And all coaches wear formal clothes - in fact even Rhys Meyers in Bend it wore clothes like these and a track suit while jogging. I am sure that Kurt also rapped when introducing his team!

Another rip-off poster. Seems for every hindi film there are plenty of people claiming them copies of various films. This film is based on a true story of an INDIAN hockey coach. So if Hollywood has made a film about Indian coach and Indian womens hockey team, then good for them, but I highly doubt it. Americans are known for their ignorance about other countries and cultures, so just stop making a fool of yourself and if you still think it's a copy AFTER you have seen it, then there is at least some point in discussing this. Now you are only parading your own prejudice against hindi cinema (that they only copy HW)

reply

thank you pompula for a beautiful rendition of the american ignorance

I get very tired of people complaining that every Bollywood movie is a rip-off. In the first place-having just watched 42 Christmas movies,I completely agree that there really are only 32 basic story lines. Secondly,Chakde is like quite a few movies, some of them based on real life events. The difference is that Indian nationalism is not only a different kind of animal than what you encounter in the U.S. but the separatism between states is also just as distinct (and much much more) than depicted in the movie. Every movie I've seen that was copied, even if the dialogue was the same word for word, was still Indianized and sometimes far better because of the subtle changes. An in case you're forgetting,Hollywood has been stealing the TV hits from BBC for years and re-doing them. Lately,it's gotten so lazy,it doesn't bother to try a new idea.It simply stays with what worked before.I cite Law and Order,L&O SVU, L&O Criminal Minds, and there was a 4th offshoot. Then came CSI,CSI NY, CSI Miami, NCIS, NCIS Los Angeles, and the 15 or so Vampire shows presently on.Poor me.I watch Big Bang and Zee TV.And When The movies try to be really daring, the take a classic like The Sound of Music, and present it live on TV with a country western singer singing the part of an Austrian nun during World War 2. I call this daring casting. Comedy at its finest.
So stop picking on Bollywood. At least they have the nerve to take on issues like a muslim coach being accused of playing for the Pakistani team when he was captain of the Indian team.

Okay, thats a fair call, I haven't seen the Kirt Russell film you are talking about . . . I might still suggest actually seeing the film before definitively calling it a rip-off.

Personally I don't have great hopes for this film, I'm not a huge fan of sports films, and overt patriotism irritates me . . . but none the less I will be at the cinema, front and center, to see this one on the day it opens

I like sports films if they are done well. Winning a team sport event is only peripherally patriotism as the country flag does get hoisted, but it is all about personal glory too. The Olympics or world cup can hardly be called patriotic events. Having said that, for a country like India to win Olympic gold so many times and then to be nowhere in contention is a matter of national concern.

I'm also not a fan of sports movies, in fact I have a very strong dislike towards them. The reason I'm still expecting this film very much, is strictly because of Shahrukh, I have a strong feeling it will be one of his finest performances. I hope the film will be otherwise good also. I'm thinking I should learn something about hockey before seeing the film (the rules etc) so I won't have the same problem as with Lagaan, where I was so bored, I wanted to tear out my eyes. (Well, truthfully, even if this isn't SRK's best performance ever, thanks to him, I don't expect to be bored at any moment...)

reply

Pompula - it is a question of what one likes. Monty Python did a skit where cricket was played with furniture on the field and the spin dryer was bowling to the couch! Hockey is a much faster paced game and not unlike soccer in rules etc. Things are usually on the move and there is not much standing around. I do not think you need to know the rules other than offside etc. which you probably do know already.

I grew up watching cricket - and my family still watches matches all night long. Sigh! I think of it as a colossal waste of time.

The story loosely is based on the life of an Indian Hockey player called "Mir Ranjan Negi". Please check your facts before you start dissing.

I think Shimit Amin is a good director and I just hope that he doesn't fall prey to the *beep* of Bollywood.

Can't wait for this movie to come out...SRK looks yummy (as usual). And I LOVED the trailer.

Agreeing with everyone else but the OP, and I just have to say to him/her, hon, being the first to say that a Hindi movie is a ripoff, does not always ensure a firm following of other "Yes, it is a ripoff of..." answers, and I HAVE seen Miracle, are you sure you're watching the same movie? If that's the case then, Coach Carter is a ripoff of Glory Road don't you agree?

I'd give my right arm to be ambidextrous

reply

This block may contain spoliers.-----------

Sirji it is based on real life story of "Mir Ranjan Negi"

who was our national team's goal keeper. in 1982 cup asiancup final because of him india was defeated by pakistan 7-1

he was real life looser at that days.

The same guys was coach of indiam hokey team who won gold in asiacup.

Guys , i know most of our movies are rip-off of hollywood movies, even we copy thier Tagline 2,but all films are not rip-offs.

we should appreciate them if out directors try out something new.

Chak De India

reply

Dimaag Chal Raha Hai Inlogo Ka!!
before telling its a Rip-Off of a Movie Miracle, Chak De India is also copied from a Low Buget movie where Sanjay Suri is the Coach and coaches Cricket, his character resembles SRK very much. Here SRK has to coach girls hockey on International level, where as in Sanjay Suri's movie he coaches unfortunate school students. Well most say who cares, but Chak De India just has good dailogs and not to mention SRK which makes everything huge.
i will rather download the movie from the net else then wasting money in cinemas.

reply

Nothing stops any movie from having good dialog - it does not take budget to write good dialog, it takes talent! With Shimit Amin and Jaideep Sahni we have talent associated with the film. The film has found and trained women to act AND play hockey.

Why not a copy of Iqbal then - where Naseer coaches Shreyas! Maybe Sanjay Suri was copying Mir Ranjan Negi and they just changed the sport to cricket? Or maybe he was copying Hanks in League of their own. All cricket films are usually dabba for me - I only liked Iqbal.

I saw the movie on opening night guys. And all that matters now is that it was so good I could see it twice. And everyone who saw it says they loved it. You can either read the critics who wrote the reviews before the movie was released or you could go with the word of those who actually saw it.
I haven't seen a movie this well done in a long time. SRK's style and acting both were different - for the better - and in line with his character.
The girls were awesome.

About the originality of the movie - It's based on a true story. It's not copied from any other movie.

reply

No argument from me. BTW the critics are loving it. It got only 2 bad reviews and one was Taran Adarsh!

Why pay attention to foolish rants/posts from people who never saw the film or know nothing about what inspired it?

I saw the movie
it was awsome
i dont watch sports but when they got a goal i was excited :)
now tell me what movie is original now a day
how many time is Jason going to kill the campers that are having sex? even in outer space haha
watch the movie unbiased and judge it for the movie itself.
I saw it and it was awsome but like Lavar Burton said "You don't have to take my word for it"

reply

Yeah it maybe another Hollywood rip off...My Q is what's so wrong about it?? Look at us/our country/big city life/things we do like...isn't that technically all a rip off of west? so why do we fuss so much about when movie directors or music directors in India rip off or get inspired from Hollywood. Even our old hindi music/tunes in 50-60 or cultural boom in India or many countries were inspired/ripped off from west. Clubs you like going to...lifestyle you want to be associated with...all are coming from west.
I am quite sure you might be even living in US & talking about rip off habits of apna Indian movie guys!
So again - What is wrong about it. Accept who we are & learn to live with it

Atleast we should be happy about the fact that a director like Shamit Amin, who used to live in US went back & started making good/real movies (Ab tak Chapan) & now Chak De India which India can look at & be proud with it - hopefully we will find out own niche & make 'Indian' subject movies later in years to come.
For now, appreciate the effort & stop b**tching like a 'desi'

Cheers

Hypocrisy at its best. No one said a thing when Black was copied from "The Miracle Worker". How about everybody's favourite "Hum Tum"? Do you know it was copied from "When Harry Met Sally". No one said anyting about those rip offs.

What else? People also called Munnabhai MBBS a copy of Patch Adams. Get a life fellas.

reply

Basically this thread goes to show meaningless and pointless these "ripp-off" allegations have become. There are genuine cases of plagiarism in Bollywood, like Zinda, but if people just start frivolously accusing everything of being a ripp-off, then the word will lose its power, and people will just get sick of it. Meaning real cases of plagiarism will go unnoticed.

But anyway I find this thread ironically funny. Watching Srani squirm to protect against allegations of plagiarism against her favourite actors film, when she herself frivolously accuses Black of Plagiarism --- is ironic and funny.

reply

E-Warrior - I do not squirm - because there is no plagiarism here. If you are following entertainment news at all (and you seem to be on top of it) then the real life inspiration for this film is clear to all but the blind. Defending plagiarism I leave to the likes of you. The only thing ironically funny here is that you still think Black did not plagiarize.

I am sure you are tracking my posts - then you will have seen the one about SRK in Heyy Baby - just so you know that I do not defend plagiarism wherever it is done.

As for the logic in your post:
Basically this thread goes to show meaningless and pointless these "ripp-off" allegations have become. There are genuine cases of plagiarism in Bollywood, like Zinda, but if people just start frivolously accusing everything of being a ripp-off, then the word will lose its power

Are you saying this film is a ripoff? Then these allegations are worth making. Are you saying this is not a ripoff? Then what on earth do you mean? I am squirming because there is proof this is not plagiarized?

And to completely lay this foolish controversy to rest here are some links:

Chak De India, loosely translated as "Arise India" or "Come On India", Shah Rukh plays Kabir Khan, a disgraced hockey player. The film is based on events surrounding former Indian goalkeeper Mir Ranjan Negi’s life. Negi’s team lost to Pakistan 7-1 in 1982.

From this fall from grace, he rose to reclaim glory two decades later as coach of the Indian women’s national hockey team in 2002. Negi in real life, and Shah Rukh in the reel life, have a formidable task. The girls are a rag-tag bunch of losers who have never known the thrilling energy of being "Team India".

so bloody true. I think all these people are the ones who just wanna assure to themselves and to others that they're Americans. And the best way, they think, to prove that is to talk trash about everything Indian. But the only think they represent in Hollywood are cab drivers and loonie store owners. lol. The movies that represent them are those with less than 1000 dollars budget like ABCD , American desi bu*lshii. ahahaha. Morons.

reply

Rip of? from what? this movie is about an Indian player and Indian women's hockey team. Not American. Apparently you are a rip of from some other country. Check your Jeans dude as it may not be made in USA. I guess nDevdas is a rip of and so too is Mother Indian and maybe Mahatma Gandhi is also an rip of? Interesting. I am quite sure Om Shanti Om is a rip of in your book.
