Hmmm why don't we check some stats...
1)Michael Chiklis - the Shield *not playing a greek
2)Jennifer Anniston - nope!
3)Rita Wilson - only on the BFGW tv series- one episode
4)Olympia Dukakis - played a lot of italians...guess that doesn't count
5)Melina Kanakaredes - played a greek on a soap opera, wasn't greek on Providence, what is she on CSI N.Y. ??? oh she did play DeNiro's GREEK gf in a movie ! damn that is a stereotype or just playing to character ?

She is maximizing her heritage for her material, I kind of think comediennes do that. Case in point that redneck guy. Duh !!! Get a life ! Most people are proud of their heritage, I know I am !

Katerina (oh yeah I am half greek, the other half is irish) and I celebrate and enjoy both.

Why shouldn't Greek people be proud and want to show off their heritage? There is not 1 day that I don't turn on my TV and see some Latina using her heritage to get her career going!!!!

There are many famous people that are Greek and don't advertise it!

Here are a few names that you would be surprised to know they are Greek:

Jennifer Aniston
Hank Azaria
Tina Fey
Jamie Lyn Discala
Mena Suvari
Frank Zappa
Billy Zane
Angie Harmon
Elizabeth Perkins
Chris Sarandon
Kelly Clarkson
Chriss Angel
Tony Orlando
Tommy Lee
Betty White

Well stated! And the WESTERN wold NOT EXIST without the GREEKS, it is AS SIMPLE AS THAT! Anything that has to do with CIENCES< ART< PHILOSOPHY< MATHMATICS< POETRY< RETHORIC < POLITICS< IDEAS< LANGUAGE etc COMES FROM GREECE.

ANy word related to these disciplines that it's use in English- Spanish or any language that comes from LATIN has borrowed the words from GREEK because they existed bEFORE and the Romans did not have words for all those things, they borrowed what was there already.

---------- on other news...

Hank Azaria comes from a Greek -Jewish Sephardic family. From the town of Tsaloniki, where there was a huge Jewish population- same as in Smyrna, Turkey.
They spoke "ladino" which is Castillian Spanish kept in a "time capsule" and developed its own way.

A Sephardic Jew in Israel can very easily communicate with a Latin-American Spanish Speaking Jew!

Sephardic Jews had lived there for almost 500 years, since being expelled from Spain in 1492 and welcomed by the Ottoman Empire (that at that time comprised both countries and more)- then most were killed by the Nazis the same way that Ashkenazy jews were.

sorry for getting off topic (just a little)

unfortunately no..

Big deal.

That's like complaining about Ben Stiller or Adam Sandler: "wow, he's a Jewish man playing a Jewish character in a movie!" Those two ALWAYS incorporate their Jewish heritige into their movies whenever possible; Nia does the same with being Greek.

Hey, as long as the movies are good, I don't care. Them being Jewish or Greek is never going to be the root cause for the movie failing; it's what makes them who they are and separates them from other actors.

Corrected: incorrect use of lowercase.

Deservedly so. My family lived in Thessaloniki for several years and we found the Greek people to be the most charming and kindest hosts you could imagine. The country is beautiful beyond words and it's easy to believe that the Gods once walked there and inspired some of the most beautiful Art and Ideas the world has produced. In many countries, the ancient world is isolated from the new, roped off as mere tourist attractions, but modern-day Greeks seem to be so comfortable living with their ancient ruins and traditions that you don't feel the division of Old vs New, only the gentle flow of time from then to now...

When I watched this movie, I nearly wept for wanting to go back to Athens, Delphi, Olympia, Epidauros, Korinthos, Salonika...the Peloponnese, the sea, the biggest, sweetest oranges in the world, the sweetest pastries, the kindest smiles...brown hills, blue water...

"I sang of leaves, of leaves of gold, and leaves of gold there grew..."

Where I grew up, everyone was obssessed with their heritage. Italians, Portuguese, Irish and who ever. Thats how it is in a lot of the northeast. Its kinda like how southerners are obssessed with "southern pride" and their rebel flags and such.

Well open universe2003, I think you have been answered.

Well said ((( everyone )))!

Many people love their culture and country enough to protect it by spilling blood in war. The Greek people have had numerous wars, and one thing that passes down from generation to generation is their pride in their culture.

Even people who have left the country of Greece for one reason or another (mostly economic difficulties from war and depressions) have promised to return one day. They promised that no matter what country they flee to, they would remember their culture, instill it into their children, and one day return to their homeland.

That's why Greeks are so proud! Look at any history book, the Greek people have given so much to mankind (as noted in all the posts above).

As with any culture that comes into the huge melting pot of America, they keep their cultural integrity because they love and respect it. Many American people lose their lineage and forget they just call themselves Americans; however, the only true Americans are the Native American Indians. This country was inhabited by other countries and still is today.

So yes, to answer your question, the Greeks are possessed with their heritage.
