Even as long as Dr. Who has been around (1963), "Peabody's Improbably History" predated it by several years (late 50s).

Before I saw this this, one of my friends described it as "the best Doctor Who episode ever."

He was able to get out of any predicament by using simple objects around him, his enormous intelligence, and by never panicking. He never relied on a Sonic Screwdriver. I do see a similarity with Doctor Who but I first thought of MacGyver.
