Interesting fact

I watched this movie about 2 months ago and found the story of the Eliza, her mother, the Duchess of Devonshire, and her father, Charles Grey, to be sad, yet fascinating the more I researched the real story. Recently I looked up a bit of interesting genealogy regarding Eliza's half-siblings/relatives on both sides:

Charles Grey's son with Mary Ponsonby, the Rev. Hon. Sir Francis Richard Grey (what a title!) married the daughter of Georgiana Cavendish, who, in turn, was Georgiana, the Duchess of Devonshire's granddaughter. Her name was Lady Elizabeth Howard. A bit confusing, I know.

So this means Eliza Courtney's half-brother Francis on her father's side married her half-niece Elizabeth (Eliza's half-sister Georgiana's daughter) on her mother's side. Wow! Never know with the U.K.'s aristocracy what you will find in their lineages!

Oh yes. I've been working on royal and aristocratic genealogy and it gets REALLY convoluted at times.

That was hardly uncommon, since you were expected to marry within your own (often limited) social circle.
