God I hate Asuka.

That bitch single-handedly ruined the entire film for me. She starts out completely and utterly repelent, and this continues until the very end of her screen-time. But even when she starts to grow up, the fact remains that she's used as a conduit for about 70% of the movie's fanservice (I know I'm exagerrating, but still...); the crown jewel of all of this is that RIDICULOUS test plug-suit. Why the F#@K would they have something like that even made? Honestly, that scene where she opens her heart and soul to Misato is impossible to take seriously, thanks to that suit.

Rarely do I ever have such a strong, uncontrollable urge to whack a cartoon character in the face with a brick, no matter how much I dislike them. Even when Gendo does the world a service and orders her to be ground into little-bitty c#@t meatballs, she STILL survives.

So, to sum it all up, I hate Captain Shikinami to the point where the very sight of her stresses my hump.

That's my two cents, anyway.

We have a saying that comes in handy at troubled times like these:

"Haters gonna Hate"

From what I've heard, Asuka is supposedly more likable than she was in the series... Then I actually watched the movie. She's the same obnoxious harlot with a superiority complex that ends every other sentence with "stupid." What was different about her? Her name? The fact that she learned a new word (which is "idiot," by the way)?

reply

I agree about the plugsuit, it's so sexist or maybe one of the bows to the old school otakus.

And Asuka was a bigger bitch in the manga series than here.

Can't believe NGE is that old. I was 14 when I read the manga. Amazing!

reply

So, you haven't seen the series that inspired both the manga and these movies?

I've only seen the series, and honestly, I liked that version of Asuka more. Despite her behavior, she had a certain girlish charm which made her at least somewhat likable and relatable, and her (very disturbing) background did garner sympathy. So far in Rebuild, however, she lacks any semblance of that charm and comes off as -- contrary to what EVERYBODY except me seems to think -- an even bigger bitch than she ever was.

I'll admit, however, that near the end of her screentime, she showed a bit of potential for growing up. Unfortunately, any sympathy and hope I may have had for her was completely washed away by that ungodly abomination of a plugsuit.

So, in the end, this Asuka is just so irritating and so ridiculously portrayed that it's impossible for me to like/care for her character.

I've seen and read everything many times. I'm just saying that manga version of Asuka was worse (the panties scene is the prime example) although reading it was one of the best manga experiences of my life :) I watched the series when internet wasn't that popular and accessible (in Japanese with German subtitles, which was fun because I only started to learn German at that time but Asuka's German in the series was worse than mine...).

I rather liked her, I mean she was mean and everything but just like in the real life- kids are hard to live with esp. when they have been through something traumatic, and her mother's suicide was one of these things. The more the world hurts you, the more numb you become. That's what happened to Shinji but the way he hurt people was more introvert- Asuka loved verbal attack while Shinji preferred giving up, running away and disappointing people. Gosh, I hated him in EOE.

In Rebuild I feel it's not even the same character. I'm not that keen on the new story too much because it looks more like a typical adventure anime and Evangelion has always been different, special. I really loved it as a kid. And I still love it as an adult. But I guess this way it's easier to digest than the original one, simpler and more fun, less pain. But it's pain and changing, emotionally unstable characters that we learnt to love in the 90s. Yet, there's a new ending to look forward to!

In conclusion, I totally understand why people would hate Asuka. But I also have in mind that there's a reason behind all these thorns.

Cheers and happy watching.

Nice observations.

Also, just how is Rebuild's version of Asuka different for you?

reply

Asuka is one of the most straight-forward and likeable character in the Rebuild series along with Misato.
She is brave in action and tsundere when not.

I think she sort of saved 3.0 film.

reply

I still haven't seen 3.0, and with what I've seen of her so far, I'd hardly call her well-written, well-developed, interesting, or likeable.

reply

I love Asuka in NGE but hate what they did to her in these Rebuild films.

"We'll be alive but like a nightmare. You drink blood, you won't wake up from nightmare."

reply

Don't you know that she's hurting inside? She's written out to be a jerky brat but if you watch the series first, you would understand. I was like that too when I was abused in school.

And don't curse! We have too many people cursing about this girl already. They don't know what it's like to have a life like Asuka's.

Well, I liked her the moment she came to the screen but I wasn't watching it very much because it came on at night but I always liked Asuka throughout the scenes I saw and never hated her, even when I watched the series or read the manga. and this was before I watched the series, I never understood it but somehow she stood out to me as a non-generic character who acts like a childish teenager. Yes, she can be annoying and could've been a little nicer.

Do you really have to be so mean? A child like Asuka given such a deep and depressing past makes her even more likeable than the characters we see today!

Yes, she can be hateful but at least more people would even like her who could care less about brats.

Is there any explanation I missed as to why Asuka's name & attitude changed from original series???
