Why do people like Eric so much?

Not trolling. Genuinely curious. What about this character do you love? (If you do love his character.) I write on occasion and would love to learn what makes a character (a mass murderer no less) so loved. Was it just the fact he was easy on the eye and had a wry sense of humour? Is he like Dexter in those respects? Thoughts?

Because he was the hot "bad boy." It's the same reason why girls love Damon on The Vampire Diaries.

I haven't watched vamp diaries yet. Will have to give it a go one of these days.

Glad someone asked this question. I've always wondered myself. Now I know.

Because he's not Bill.

I would always rather be happy than dignified. 

Am starting to think I should ask a new question: why do people dislike Bill so much? :)

That could take days to answer.

lol

He's disliked because he's considered boring, a horrible person who makes everyone think he isn't and he pretty much got rammed down everyone's throat in the show because Alan Ball is a fan of the character. I like Bill, though.

I like Bill and Eric. I think Eric's more fun, though.

I'd describe it as a love-hate relationship for myself, whenever I get annoyed or disgusted with the character a few lines showing he's got a sense of humor brings me back around. How can you not love the guy who sees Bill at his lowest and says "I want my phone back." Or at the end when he finally throws Ginger a bone and then shows a bit of concern for her and disappointed he didn't get anything out of the years and years of her wanting him. And of course also the fact that he's one of the best looking male vamps in the series helps.

When you get down to it - all the vampires are mass-murderers, it's just that for some of them we don't see it as much because of their personalities. But even if they feel regret, is that supposed to forgive them for the horror they've caused? You don't really see the results from the point of view of the humans, I mean you see some of it but really there should be a lot more horror and sadness based on how many families have been torn apart because a monster gets a bit hungry.

Comparing him to the other main vampire, Bill, you get a sense of two ways a vampire deals with being a vampire. Bill comes across as fairly charming and down to earth, he comes across as regretful and trying to avoid excesses but... he still kills, and in some cases justifies internally his murders better than Eric. But Bill comes across as just too depressing at times, everything is just the weight of the world on his shoulders. I really think Eric just getting over those concerns and having a little more fun with it seems easier to believe, and gets you to forget they're really all monsters no matter what the outside package.

One thing that I just couldn't get over with Eric is his connection with Pam. Pam has nothing going for her other than loyalty for Eric, she's a major b*tch of a character who isn't likeable at all... constantly you see Eric going out of his way include or save her, even when he came across as suicidal in the last season. Hard to understand the loyalty he feels for her, even though yes I know they've been together for years.

reply

We must have seen a different show if you think Bill was charming and down to earth. Weasel is more like it.

Eric is Pam's maker. Pretty much the same bond parents and children have for each other. Would you just toss your son or daughter away just because you didn't like what they were doing. And if you'll have noticed even though Eric didn't like Tara once she became his "granddaughter" she was also off limits for anyone harming her. Eric has always been loyal to his vampire family members.

I see a lot of the reason why Eric is liked so much is because of him being okay with what he is and bashing Bill for being the opposite, but no one takes in account of Eric being a vampire for thousands of years and Bill not even a quarter of that. Why would he be uncomfortable with being a vampire? That excuse is just dumb, especially when there are vampires who "have no apologies" and "know who they are" and use that excuse to murder innocent humans. But whatever...
I do agree that he is written waay better than Bill, I liked him for the first season and then I just didn't care about him anymore. While, Bill was getting worse, Eric was rising, at least for me. Eric's just an all around interesting character. I totally see why he's well like. Sort of like Spike from Buffy, who I adore. I just still don't get why people feel the need to bash Bill when explaining why they like Eric. This question was about him. Not Bill...

"You mustn't be afraid to dream a little bigger, darling." 

He has a sensual, alluring quality to him. Also, despite his ruthlessness, he does not come across as evil.

Women in general like assh*les.

I kinda have to agree with this, but plenty of guys like these types of characters too. I appreciate an interesting *beep* every now and then, but the badass jerk character is getting very old now, imo.

Apart from the spicy humor and the total eye candy, he was very cruel, beastly and not possible to tame or reason. He had that vibe of the good, old-fashioned monstrous vampire. Although, the age didn't help. 1,000yo and being like that wasn't logical.
