Fiction compared to the real story

I know this has been discussed repeatedly on here. It just bothers me that the director or writer didn't bother telling the real story. I actually saw this movie first then saw An American Crime. It wasn't till later that I actually learned the real story. I saw a small clip about the real case on I think Deadly Women. I remembered these movies and had always thought it was odd they had a similar storyline. I just don't get why someone would add fiction to a real-life crime.

I've read all I can about the real story. I've read the court transcripts and listened to some podcasts. I've also heard a radio interview with Richard Hobbs. So it isn't like the facts about the crime isn't out there. It's just troubling someone would want to change so much. It just seems disrespectful to Sylvia and her sister. They lived through this.

Last night I started reading a book based on this crime called Torture Mom by Ryan Green. His book states that the father of Sylvia actually slept in the living room around the time he made the arrangments for his daughter's to stay there. This was the first time I've read about that.
