Did anyone else think Prestly...(spoiler)

...was Way too good for Trish. He was such a sweet guy and she was kind of a slut, and she didn't even consider doing anything romantic with him until he cleaned himself up. He kind of, in his own way, asked her every day why not consider a guy like me and she always shot him down. I knew they would end up together but I didn't really see what Prestly saw in Trish other than she was pretty...and easy

I really didn't like that Tish only accepted Priestly after he changed the way he looked. I mean, it was a good way for him to get her attention, but it was a bit extreme.

That was one thing. But the first reason was, he never asking Tish to go out with him.

A little quote after she slaped by Tadd and all sitting at Trucker's home:

Trucker: But promise me something.
Tish: Whatever you want.
Trucker: No more *beep* Find a nice guy to.
Tish: The point is that such men ask me out. (She looks to Priestly)

Thank You!! The whole point of Jen's story line was that you shouldn't judge people on the way they look and yet Priestly has to change entirely to get that woman that didn't deserve him! I thought for a second she was going to redeem herself a little by saying she would go out with him IF he went back to his usual look, but she didn't.

I felt for Priestly. I guess because I kinda see him as a mirror of me. I'm kinda punk/goth, but not as extreme as Priestly, yet when I'm with my friends (who aren't), they always get looked at and I don't. Anyway though, it bugged me that Priestly had to go and change his image just to get her attention. Though, he proved to be just as shallow, since he had feelings for Tish (the hot chick). This whole movie is just one big commentary on how shallow people can be.

And if you can't be with the one you love, love the one you're with.

Suprisingly, when Tish wasn't being slutty, I actually liked her personality. She was funny and strong and confident, which is probably what Preistly saw in her. Preistly was, by far, my favorite character, so I was pretty pissed when he changed the way he looked. I liked him with his mohawk and weird facial hair and piercings. Then again, the point of the movie is being honest, and maybe all that stuff was just him hiding from himself.

But to answer your question, yes, Preistly was way too good for Tish.

I think the world's going to end bloody. Doesn't mean we shouldn't fight.

I missed the last eight minutes of the movie (walked out), but from hearing that Priestly changed his appearance just for a girl upsets me. I don't understand why his old appearance would be just him hiding from himself. Don't people usually express themselves through style of hair and/or clothing?

People can use their clothes/hair as a shield as well, hiding themselves in plain sight, making themselves seem to be one thing when they are really another. I did it all the time.

That was actually the ONE thing I really had a problem with in this movie. Not that they ended up together, but that they only ended up together AFTER Priestly decided to look more like that douche-knocker Tad.

They pretty much spent most of the movie trying to convey a message that everyone is beautiful in their own right and that you shouldn't have to change who you are and people should except you for who you are. The whole Jen story line was all about that -- she was scared that Fuzzy was too good looking for her. Then they even have Priestly say something like "you're like two year olds, only caring about the wrapping paper and not what's inside" or something like that. I really thought that was when Tish was going to realize that Priestly was into her and consider him...

But then I feel like they TOTALLY erased that whole message by making Priestly change who he was for Tish. It was so counter productive

Agree! i enjoyed this movie alot but i hated that he had to change to get her attention. it went against all the other storylines. if they were gonna get together (which i wish they hadn't) it should have been him however he wanted to be (piercings and all). i wish they hadn't gotten together at all. I wish tish would have learned that she doesn't need to be with a guy and had just stayed single for a while.

I agree too. Honestly if I was the director, I would have made them end up together differently. I think Tish should have kissed Priestly right after they found out he was the one who told Fuzzy about Jenn. And then she tells him to pick her up for their date. And when he shows up for their date, he could have shed his costume and came as the clean type guy. So they could have had the exact scenes they wanted by changing one minor scene. Making her kiss him before he changed. That way, he didn't change to be accepted. He changed because he was happy to lower his guard.

Yeah, Tish was just a common tramp. She would be cheating on him within a few weeks. I thought that was a big hole in the movie. I was hoping that he would reject Tish in the end and she would learn something, not ask her out after she had shown no interest at all in him.

And why would anyone want Tish for anything but sex? A real relationship with a slut? It's like marrying a prostitute. Why? It's not because of how she looked, it's her behavior.

you guys are totally missing the point with this one. The entire movie was about how people were hiding who they truly are:

Tish with her excessive sex life and Priestly with his image. Although, it annoyed me that he had to change I understand why they did it. It wouldn't do to have Boas (XD love his name btw) was the only character without a major overhaul.

It's just a movie about relationship. Nothing wrong with a nice guy liking a tramp. Especially if she is good looking. So what if the relationship will not end until the next summer? What's important is the movie and the story it is trying to tell. If I remember correctly, the movie didn't say "...and they lived happily ever after...".

The worst is, you can this a plot hole? Do you even know what plot hole means? No, wait don't tell me. This is a rhetorical question. I have to spell it out or else you will start answering me thinking I am really asking the question.

reply

Oh I agree. I thought the movie was great but i believe that the message to the film was something like "be yourself" and Presley did a complete 180 with Tish at the end. Why did he change his appearance for her? That's soo dumb. I mean I thought it was cute to ask her out but after that, he should've just went back to being who he was.

I'm with Tiffy70103 and others on this one. It was a serious mistake to have Priestly change his appearance to appease Tish. It was inconsistent to the main theme.

First, it was totally not expected from the Priestly character as he'd been portrayed as strong and confident in his own skin. Remember when he yelled at Tish about her caring more about "the wrapping on the gift" instead of what is inside? So his character does a 180 and comes groveling to Tish for acceptance? I can't imagine why the writer or director would make that call.

Perhaps - if the filmmaker really just HAD to include this scene - Tish could've said something like, "Yes, I'd love to got out...but bring your mohawk along. I like you as you are." before she kissed Priestly. This could've been followed by the beach ceremony shot, showing Priestly with Tish, as he had been before shopping at Banana Republic.

In that way, we would've seen better character development with Tish and relief from Priestly that he, like Jen, doesn't have to change. He can take his own advice to heart!

Also, if the director doesn't have time to watch for continuity on the monitor with every take, then a continuity crew member is needed. For example (see when Piper asks Trucker for the job), it is sloppy to have hair behind the ear, then suddenly in front, then back, then front. Ugh. It takes you out of the movie experience.

Otherwise, the film is fun for the most part.

Also, it would have stayed true to it's main theme about truth and acceptance.

To me it seemed like he wasn't even comfortable enough with himself to face up to his own first name. He might have made the change because he wanted to start with Platica on a clean slate, both of them sure needed it. I also feel people are a bit harsh on Platica, yes she was/is a slut in the movie, but that's not all there is to her. To me she seemed like a pretty nice person if you look away from the slut-stuff, and Priestley had propably seen that in the time they'd worked together.

I'm not claiming to be an expert, but since the movie is so well written in all other aspects of the story, it seems strange for them to go and make Priestley change if his motivation was shallow and didn't have a deeper meaning.

Maybe it's more of a nod toward chaning in general. It's not so much changing your self for someone else as much as. . .just change. That's something you can't fight. Yes it sucked he changed his image for her (i liked him like he was) BUT. . .maybe him changing changed her as well.

reply

Yeah i didn't like that he had to change who he was to be with her. I think Trih already liked him 'sort of' but once he changed his appearance she REALLY liked him. She probably would have gone out with him even if he hadn't changed he just needed to ask.

Had to? He chose to.

And people cheer when Sandy comes out like a ho at the end of Grease.

Honestly, some people walk around making themselves look as unattractive as possible. Someone who looks like Priestly can't stay that way forever....you have to evolve and sometimes a person is the catalyst.

I find Jense one of the most attractive men on the planet, but I do not find pre-change Priestly cute at all...it's visual perception and nothing to be ashamed of.
